Delhi Agra Tour -Recently I had a visit to Agra to see the Monument of Love the Taj Mahal!…
Lovers die, but Love stays forever. The Taj says it all aloud!
In the year 1607 when a prince of the royal Mughal named Shaha Jahan strolled down the Meena Bazaar, he caught a glimpse of a girl and fell in love with her at first sight. That time their age was just 15yrs. Ever since that time, it had been Shaha Jahan’s dream to marry her. But before his wish came true, he had to marry a Persian princess first for political reasons. His beloved, therefore, had to settle for the role of second wife in his life. He wedded Mumtaj Mahal after 5yrs when he became20. In Shaha Jahan’s heart, however, she was always first. She was the only woman that bore him children. She gave birth to 14 children in 19 years of marriage. But the 14th childbirth took her life!
For seven days and seven nights after her death, the King didn’t eat. On the eighth day, he finally walked out of his chamber and ordered the construction of a most beautiful monument. The chosen material was pure white marble, symbolizing the flawless memory of her Beloved….
After 17 years, in 1648, this Beauty was constructed. In 1666, when Shah Jahan was on his deathbed, his last wish was to be carried to a window facing the Taj Mahal, to whisper again the name of his lifelong love. With the flow of the Yamuna River, hundreds of years have passed. Now, in 2011, the Taj Mahal is still located in Agra. I was really carried away when the Guide was telling me this story. Every couple must visit Taj in their lifetime…
How to Reach Agra
Kheria Airport is 6 km from Agra. From IGI (the International Airport at Delhi), Agra is 220km.
The main station is Agra Cantt, you have to do reservation upto this point. If there is no direct train to Agra from your state, then come upto New Delhi and take a 4hr journey to Agra in Taj Express (reservation should be done well in advance)
When we reached Agra Cant, the rikshaws and auto walas grabbed us like anything!! But still we managed to come out of the trap, hire a taxi and headed for a hotel first. Then after fresh-in up we hired a taxi and reserved it for the whole day for sight seeing. In night and early morning hours weather was cold but after 10-11am I didn’t felt cold due to warm sun shine..
Places I visited
I don’t need to give any introduction for Taj Mahal ! but to b honest, to see Taj is very emotional, I fell in love with my hubby all over again…
Note : Plz note that Taj Mahal remains closed on Friday. So when ever you plan trip to Agra, keep this thing in mind.
The fort is also known as Lal Qila , Fort Rouge and Red Fort of Agra. It is about 2.5 km northwest of the Taj Mahal . u know, during last days of Shaha Jahan, he was imprisoned by his son Aurangazeb here, & he used to see his beloved Mumtaj’s tomb ‘Taj Mahal’ from the window. The fort can be more accurately described as a walled palatial city.
This is the tomb of the greatest of the Mughal emperors, Akbar. His contributions to Agra city and the nation are par excellence. Akbar during his life time planned and carried out many important projects that covered broad institutions like arts, literature, religion, architecture and statesmanship.
This mausoleum was commissioned by Noor Jahan- wife of Jahangir , for her father Mirza Ghiyas Beg , who had been given the title of Itmad-Ud-Daulah’s (pillar of the state).
The guide said this tomb is considered to be a mini draft of Taj Mahal.
2nd day we went to Fatehpur Sikri and shopping after that. Fatehpur Sikri is a bit far away from the city, don’t know the exact time but it took almost 1 hr or so to reach there. It was the political capital of India’s Mughal Empire under Akbar ‘s reign. Here the famous Buland Darwaza is present.
