Bidisha asks,
Hi…
I know I am a little late in commenting..but I am pregnant. And this is my 11th week..this is my first time..and I was looking for skin care line safe during pregnancy when I came across this post…
My skin is doing fine no acnes till now but I have noticed its becomes little dull…are parlour trips ok now?my hair has gone for a toss…it has become exxxxxxxtremely dry and my hair is everywhere…floor, pillow, sink…I have tried coconut and olive oil as long as my hair is oiled it’s fine but the minute I wash it…it’s like a jihadu…also my hair color has completely washed off..will lush henna be safe for such dry hair? I would be happy if someone suggests something…also are regular face washes safe now?what about body washes and shampoos and conditioner?I guess thesis would be the longest list of question asked by anyone but ……

Hi Bidisha,
congrats on your pregnancy. I am in my 34th week now so some tips from my side.
You can use Lush henna, no haircolors. I heard bleach for face is harmful but a gynac friend of mine suggested its fine to use bleach, so I use fem herbal bleach twice a month. For face I use Shisheido day cream which has been mild. I faced extreme dry skin so used glycerine and rose water mix for the body.
For the hair oil your hair (I use parachute hot oil, but i dont heat it) every two days, it removes heat too, and wash with a mild shampoo, herbal essence worked for me. But then everybody’s body and skin is different.
I visited the parlor only once for pedicure, but then I think facials and sleeping on your back for too long is not great. Use a sunscreen when you go out, you should be fine in some days. Initially the nausea makes your dull, later you will look fab when you start eating. Hope this helps..
Many congratulations…for extreme dry skin you can mix glycerin in your body lotions or moisturiser too during pregnancy.
Hey jay…congrats to you too..thanks..will defntly try lush henna as i am looking 50+
my skin doesn’t react well to sunscreen so I prefer the good ol umbrella!
Any other tips from your side do let me know….
Thanks anamika…so I just buy a bottle of glycerin and put it in the body lotion bottle right?
i use to keep both of them separately and then mix together..and yes u can do it with your doctor.
continue the shampoo and conditioner that u have used before.. avoid essential oils. my opinion is to avoid facials that take too much time.. moisturise immediately after every shower.. and reg hairfall, as u take supplements, i think it will be ok within few weeks..
also..i still suggest u too avoid bleach.
Thanks laxmi
congrats on ur pregnancy, i am a lil ahead in terms of weeks..
(there i said it.) i would say dont get facials in a parlour, often they involve vigorous massage and you know many chemicals they use. i would suggest that if at all you must just get a quick clean up done.
avoid facewashes or creams containing salicyclic acid. as for hair, i got mine cut as short as possible and in a few weeks you will have lesser hair fall i promise. the first trimester really tries your patience.
you can use regular shampoos and conditoners, just get some which dont smell too strong. mild is always good. avoid any strong shampoos that say consult ur dermatologist (nizral, selsun etc) if your dermatologist gives you an okay you can even use those. but do consult the doc for those ones.
for dry skin, i literally slapped on almond oil mixed with sesame oil, on my face, neck and body. oil ur skin immediately post a warm shower. it penetrates the skin and keeps it moisturised.

i had tough time…it was horribly hot here and my baby was not adjusting to AC..uff those were horrible days..but time passes by.
Hi Bidisha ! Congratulations !

I have a few suggestions for you too
Skin Care : Since during this time your skin is getting dry. Use Episoft/ Cetaphil Cleansing milk. Follow up with moisturizer like again Cetaphil. Moise , or other reputed brand recommended above. Its better to avoid parlour procedures You can do facial at home . You can find many DIY receipes in wiseshe. At bed time After regular cleansing, use a massage cream (may be The Nature’s Co. VitaminE cream or any other) wash of after 5-10mins massaging and follow up with toner and night cream. This would really keep your skin hydrated.
Hair Care: You can go with lush henna. But it doesn’t help much with hair fall. Use a good conditioner. If you have dandruff, you can use topical ketoconazole shampoos with consultation with your gynaec and dermat. Hair fall is very normal during this time
Take care and don’t over stress yourself !

yes ! yur pregnancy are the best days of your life so just enjoy as much as possible.
the first three months, i had absolutely no time or motivation for skin care – i was puking non-stop – the smell of my favorite lotions and creams used to cause nausea!! so i cant really tell you what to do in the first trimester or so – except, avoid facials with any sort of chemicals, bleach and even massages – none of that is safe at this stage. I’d say ensure you drink a lot of liquids, sleep well – not only in the night but afternoon naps as well, if you can – ensure u r having prenatal vitamins with the right amount of iron (that will take care of the falling hair and dull skin) – however tempting it may seem – keep off chocolates – icecreams are better and nothing like frozen fruit lollies!

Thanks everyone…yeah this is a beautiful period..the check up dates are scheduled so far apart that I at times get paranoid thinking..is everything going well?
Luckily I have escaped from the morning sickness and dizziness bouts..
Just have extreme mood swings…poor hubby has to bear it all…
oh yes! i know friend who keeps telling me how she gets angry all the time..
and she keeps cribbing of her work too
Congratulations Bidisha!!!
The hairfall could be some vitamin deficiency. Do check and take all the supplements. I would suggest the foundation supplements from Nutrilite. Nothing safer, better and more effective than that in my experience.
I was too finicky and used only natural/herbal/ayurvedic stuff mostly. I din’t use soaps, used ubtan instead, same for face. I found some herbal oils for face and body instead of moisturizers.

Avoided Perfumes and deos on most days on most days and used a little talc instead… it worked in AC office though. I remember I had created my own perfume water spray with some safe essential oils and water.
I know I was an extreme case lol
Yeah, but I never forgot one very important thing: Chemical laden lipstick on my lips every single day
It’s tough when you can’t tell people around why you have suddenly become soo choosy or finicky..my colleagues now stare at my face trying to read whether the sun is shining or are there dark clouds…it’s sooo embarrassing ..
Thanks pradnyaa..yes make up is the only thing that keeps me going too..and i dnt bother about the chemicals in them..and yeah wiseshe updates tooooo…though i am silent reader for past 2 years
Yeah, probably we should call it make up therapy
These 9 months be like a Queen Bidisha, don’t feel embarrassed about anything, its our birthright to get what we feel we should
Another thing, its out of topic but can’t help mentioning… being peaceful helps a lot, for both mom n baby. I have noticed how my every thought has affected my lil one.. she’s almost 4 now.
I practiced Vipassana meditation almost continuously in the whole pregnancy, and my daughter never gave me tough time, in first 5 days after birth she adjusted to our sleep times, and no bed wetting after the first month! Vipassana has amazing effects on babies
