My anti-ageing ‘Arsenal’ includes ingredients that address my skin issues and also help me to stay as young as possible. I suffer from adult acne and hyper pigmentation due to constant sun exposure in my job. This post talks only about the generic ingredients that are beneficial for an ageing skin. Infact, you should look out for these ingredients while buying products for your anti-ageing routine. I shall follow this blog post with detailed posts on how I incorporate these ingredients in my daily ritual.
So let us equip ourselves against the constant fight against ageing
1. Vitamin C
I know you are not surprised to see Vitamin C on the list. This powerful antioxidant is a must-have for preventing wrinkles, improving the skin texture and in my case, lightening the dark spots. Vitamin C helps the skin by neutralizing the harmful free radicals. Use vitamin C for a brightening effect and trust me, you won’t be disappointed.
However, Vitamin C also poses a great challenge in using it. This is because Vitamin C is a very unstable compound and loses its effectiveness easily. I will address this issue in my subsequent detailed post.
2. Glycolic acid
Another ingredient that I swear by. Glycolic acid is an exfoliant that removes the damaged and old skin to let the better skin shine through. As we age, the turnover rate of our skin cells slows down, which leads to fine lines, wrinkles and dull skin. This ingredient exfoliates the dead skin cells away for a youthful skin.
This is one product that has made my adult acne ‘go away and come back never again’. Glycolic acid has also helped in lightening acne marks and dark spots. But again, glycolic acid can be harsh for beginners. You need to slowly introduce the ingredient in your daily routine and watch the miracle happen.
Retinol is the primary tool to fight ageing signs. Regular usage can result in increased collagen production, improved elasticity and thickness in the skin. It is also beneficial for preventing wrinkles and hyper pigmentation. Various over-the-counter products are available in that contain small components of retinol. If you want to go big on this ingredient, however, you need to use prescription products. Avoid this if you are pregnant.
4. Essential oils
No, oils are not just for dry skinned beauties. Oily and combination skin also benefits from using oils in the skincare. Oil cancels out oil, thus limiting the excess oil production in the skin. I, initially, started using coconut oil in my skincare routine. I have now progressed to using various essential oils for anti-ageing benefits. I have made my own anti-ageing blend by using argan oil as a carrier oil and specific essential oils . This gives my skin the moisturizing effect that no moisturizer can ever do.
5. Hyaluronic acid
This may be a new ingredient that you have heard. Hyaluronic acid has the capability of holding 1000 times its weight in water. It is an excellent moisturizer for both dry and oily skin. Hyaluronic acid works by plumping the tissue under the wrinkles. Thus, acting as a filler and providing a strong defense against an ageing skin. Peptides/ collagen producing ingredients are essential for healing and forming a healthy skin. Copper peptides and pentapeptides are the two most common peptides you will find in an anti-ageing cream. Peptides are able to easily penetrate our skin and increase collagen production. They are thought to be as effective and important as Vitamin C and retinol.
Saved the best for the last. Any skincare routine, however flawless or good, will fail without a proper sun protection. It is the most important element of any anti-ageing regimen. Too much of UV exposure causes ageing resulting in dry, blotchy skin with wrinkles. Applying the sunscreen in the morning is not enough for people who have constant sun exposure in the day. Reapply after every 2 hours.
I am currently using Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry-touch sunscreen. However, once I finish this, I will move on to a physical sunscreen containing titanium dioxide and zinc. The physical sunscreens are better than chemical sunscreens for skin prone to hyper pigmentation.
