How To Dye With Henna
There are many ways to dye hair and henna is one of the most popular hair colorant in India. Most ladies go for it as henna is natural so is considered harmless. Henna also conditions hair and many young girls too like to use henna for conditioning and shine. Henna also adds more hues in natural hair.
Henna is a very good option if you want to cover you grey hair. Henna does not look great on completely white hair with every skin tone. Grey hair can easily be hidden with henna. Henna is a good conditioner but still it makes hair dry and stiff so it is better to use a deep-conditioner whenever you apply henna. This way your hair will stay smooth and strong.
You can get henna on your hair in a salon or do it at home all by yourself. It is easy to make henna paste at home.
How to make henna paste
- Henna powder- as per the length of your hair
- Amla powder- for a darker colour and nourishment
- Lemon juice- to develop the colour
- Coffee powder or tea water
- Plain water- You will not need this if you are using tea-water
Mix together all the ingredients and make a paste. Leave the paste overnight. You can also use it after 4-5 hours if you have less time. The paste should not be very runny as it will end up staining your skin and your clothes as well. Also do not make it too thick or else application will be tough.
How To Apply Henna To Dye Hair
Wear an old piece of clothing. Something you no longer wear. Henna application is messy and your clothes may get stained so changing is better.
Apply some petroleum jelly on your hairline so that your forehead doesn’t get henna stains.
Start from the top of head. Take a small section and apply henna with a henna-brush to the roots of hair and scalp area.
Coat the section well and then apply henna to the length of that section. As you apply henna on the strands, keep winding (coiling) them on their own. Twist the hair section and place it on top of head. This way it will stay set in place and will not unwind.
Take another hair-section close to the previous section and apply henna to it in the same way. Apply henna to the whole hair in the same way.
Hair sections will not fall off as they are wrapped tightly. They become sticky due to henna and harden too. You will not need any hair clips if you coil your hair nice and tight. Use hair clips/clutchers if you are unable to set hair properly.
Cover your head with a newspaper and wear a shower cap or plastic bag on head. Newspaper soaks the excess henna and there is no dripping.
Leave the henna on for 3-4 hours. It will harden. If you have less time then leave it for at least two hours for the color to develop nicely.
It is better if you do not shampoo your hair immediately as this will make color stay longer. Shampoo the next day. If you cannot live with that much henna then shampoo and condition your hair as usual.
Complete removal of henna residues will need 2-3 more washes.
Your hair will turn reddish and greys will disappear. Your hair will look lustrous and voluminous too. It is easy to dye hair with henna and it is not harmful for hair too.
