Help! Is It Possible To Fade Away A Longterm Sun Tanning

Reader query: Is it possible to fade away a long term sun tanning?
The reader has her face and arms tanned since a long time; she seems to have tried many options and now needs a definite solution to remove the long term tan.
This post is also to those who are looking to get through summer and maintaining their skin colour.
Skin tan is a mechanism of the body to protect itself from Ultraviolet rays. With increased exposure to the skin, melanin production increases in the skin, to protect it from damage.
As Indians, we are less prone to issues due to over exposure to sun like skin cancer. But this does not mean that we do not get tanned. Being tanned changes the skin colour to a darker shade and even the typical fairness creams would not bring back the colour we are.
If there is an over exposure to UV rays (UVA and UVB) increases the melanin production and results into darkening of skin. This over exposure can cause:
- Fine Lines
- Dark Spots
- Hyper pigmentation
- Skin Burn
- Premature aging
- Skin Cancer
To remove suntan, you can opt for some natural remedies
Plain yogurt can be applied before bath.
You could also apply a mix of yogurt, cucumber, tomato and gram flour. Apply these on the parts that are tanned and keep for half hour and wash them with warm water. Yogurt firms up the skin and helps to combat dark sin due to sun tan.
A paste of gram flour and rose water can be applied on the affected areas and left for 20 minutes. Remove by scrubbing it and then wash it with water. This pack can be used 2 times a week. This pack would lighten the sun tan.
You can make a paste of soaked almonds with sandalwood oil and apply it on the tanned parts. This paste is to be left for 15-20 minutes and then wash off to lighten the skin and remove any tan marks
Make a paste of oatmeal and butter milk. Exfoliate using the paste which results into clear skin and helps to lighten the skin.
You could either use gel from a leaf or use a packed gel and put on the affected areas. This cools down the skin and helps to combat any sun tan issues.
Coconut water has cooling effect on the body and if left for 30 minutes helps to lighten the skin and remove tan.
You can use citrus foods as they contain ascorbic acid that has high antioxidant properties which fades away the tan and mixing it with yogurt lightens the skin. An equal quantity of the fruit and yogurt is to be applied on the affected area and leave for half an hour .Continue use to see the results.
Blend cucumber and yogurt into a paste and apply it on the affected skin and leave for 30 minutes. Regular use helps in removal of tan.
If you wish to try counter products, you could try products that lighten the skin.
