In India almost everyone uses coconut oil for hair care. We know well that it gives shiny, strong, manageable and healthy hair. It is a rich source of lauric acid, anti-microbial properties and medium chain fatty acids which are required for hair strengthening, growth and conditioning. Coconut oil is a multi-tasking hair product with the many benefits of vitamin, minerals and many nutrients.
So, let’s check their benefits and few ways to use it for hair.
Coconut oil has antiviral, antibacterial and antifungal properties. It is quite rich in antioxidants. It improves scalp health, prevents infections and fungus, improves hair growth, etc.
5 Ways to Use Coconut Oil
Coconut oil doesn’t have any chemicals but is an excellent conditioner. Hair becomes dry when it loses protein. It is the only oil that relatively reduces protein loss. Avoid products that contain mineral oil and opt for coconut oil instead. Lauric acid in coconut oil has low molecular weight and can penetrate into the hair shaft easily. Thus it nourishes hair well with vitamins, minerals and amino acids.
Use it as leave in conditioner or use just a couple of hours before hair wash. You can also leave it overnight. If you have dry and damaged hair, then add two drops of sandalwood essential oil and/or geranium essential oil to coconut oil and apply it.
If your hair loss is severe then coconut oil can help you to get long and thick hair. It deeply penetrates into the hair shaft and helps your hair grow.
Massaging the scalp with it improves blood circulation and so improves hair growth. Do it very gently instead of putting much pressure. Massage for 10 minutes with hot oil thrice a week for better results.
For deep conditioning, use rosemary essential oil instead of sandalwood essential oil. 4 drops of it will do the job. Wrap your hair and scalp with a hot towel or a shower cap. It will help your scalp get most of the oil.
Coconut oil can also be used to fight dandruff. Dandruff usually happens due to dry skin and harsh chemicals in the products we use. It can also be due to fungus growth on the scalp. Lauric acid and capric acid in this oil have antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal properties which not only prevent but also cure dandruff.
All you need to do is to use 5 drops of any of these essential oils namely lavender, thyme, winter green and tea tree essential oils along with 2 tablespoons of coconut oil. Apply it evenly all over the scalp and cover with a cap or hot towel. Sit under the sun or for 30 minutes or use hair dryer instead. Now wash hair with a gentle shampoo.
Coconut oil doesn’t have harmful chemicals in it like your styling products. Dryers, flat irons, rollers, etc. zap the hair moisture and so make it brittle and rough. This oil prevents thermal damage to hair, tames hair fly aways, prevents frizz, etc. Use it for touch ups to prevent tangling and frizz.
Just take a tiny amount of the oil and warm it in your palms. Apply it from roots to the tips and then blow dry. Use any styling product over it as you like.
Protection for the Sun
Coconut oil can also protect your hair from sun. Do you know that it naturally has SPF 8? Apply it and leave it on your hair as a leave in conditioner before you go out.
This oil can be used to prevent and remove lice from your hair. A combination of coconut oil, ylang ylang oil and anise oil can treat the best way. Mix 3 tablespoons of coconut oil and 1 teaspoon of each ylang ylag oil, tea tree oil and anise oil. Mix in quantities based on your hair length and use this for your scalp and hair. Comb with fine toothed comb and cover with a shower cap. Leave it for 2 hours and sit for some time under sun or blow dry hair. Remove the cap and dispose it. Now comb hair again and then rinse hair twice with a good shampoo. Before your hair gets dried, take apple cider vinegar and water in 2:1 ratio in a spray bottle. Spray this to your hair especially on the scalp. Wet your hair completely with it and massage well. Rinse with water and comb again. Again apply little amount of coconut oil to your hair and style as desired. Do this at least once a week for few weeks.
