Things To Avoid For A Lasting Hair Color
Due to the constraint of time today, many women opt for hair color to dye their hair. I am sure you must love the feel of freshly colored hair. However, we tend to forget that after coloring, your hair needs extra attention to avoid the color from fading off. We take a look at some post-color tips for you to make the color last longer.
Opting For A Supermarket Color
First of all, it is important to choose a professional hair color rather than semi-permanent supermarket solution. It is advisable to research a bit first as per your need & choose the best brand available in the market. A good quality color itself ensures that it would not just fade away in a hair wash!
Avoid Sulfates on Color-Treated Hair:
Sulfates contain salts which strip away moisture from your hair & cause the color to fade. Go for a mild sulfate-free shampoo & use it to remove excess sebum and impurities without harming the color. You can of course use a clarifying shampoo once in a while to get rid of the product build-up.
Alcohol-Based Products: Alcohol is a very drying ingredient for your hair. Alcohol based products like hair sprays & gels speed up the color fading process. Hence, it is always better to go for alcohol-free products.
Washing Your Hair Too Often:
Avoid washing your color treated hair too often even with a color-safe shampoo and conditioner. Excessive washing eventually fades off the color. Wait till your hair is actually dirty & greasy & then go for a hair wash. You may also use a dry shampoo when having a bad hair day.
Too Much Time In The Sun:
Always make sure to protect your colored hair from the sun. The harsh rays of the sun fade the color on your hair. Whenever you are stepping out in the sun, use products with UV protection. There are plenty of SPF formulas for hair, ranging from light products to spray-in options.
You can also cover your hair with a hat or a scarf for added protection if you are going to be exposed to the sun for a long period of time.
Avoid Hot Showers:
Hot water can also reduce the life of your hair color. It opens up the pores on the scalp & releases the color. Instead, use lukewarm water to wash your hair & rinse with cold water to close the pores. This will provide longer-lasting color & keep your locks hydrated as well.
Avoid Using Heat On Your Hair:
Avoid using blow dryers, curling irons or straightening irons as much as possible. Try to let your color-treated hair dry naturally. It is advisable to stay away from them the first week or so after you color your hair. But at times when it is absolutely necessary, make sure you use a thermal protectant to protect against heat damage from styling tools.
Avoid Chlorine on Color-Treated Hair: – Always protect your colored hair whenever stepping in the pool. Apply a protective leave-in conditioner to protect your hair from chlorine since the chemicals in chlorine can lead to fading off the color. You may also wear a swim cap in order to keep your hair dry.
Double-Processing Color-Treated Hair: If you try simultaneous perming or any other hair processing technique, then you are simply adding on to the chemical list in your hair. If this is still necessary, then go for low on chemical products to protect the color from fading off.
Missing On Regular Trims: If your colored hair is damaged, then do not shy away from trimming them on a regular basis. It is important to cut the damaged hair in order to keep your tresses healthy.
Not Maintaining General Hair Hygiene: Once you have colored your hair, taking good care of your hair becomes even more important. Damaged and dry hair won’t be able to retain added hair color.
Indulge in simple hair care techniques like proper conditioning to sustain the color for a long time.
