I have been asked by many ladies who live outside Mumbai to share tips on bridal makeup for them to do their own makeup. So I decided to do a post for all those whom I cannot chat or reach in person.
There are many reasons that I contemplate in such a situation like
  • Not happy with the makeup artist.
  • Not having the budget to fit in a makeup artist (rarely happens)
  • Makeup artist ditches at the last moment for a meatier bride (happens in Mumbai a lot of times)
  • Demo done by makeup artist but sends his assistant on the D-day and ruins the makeup look
and so many more.

With beauty blogs around the corner and women and men taking a bit of time from their hectic schedules to actually peep into a beauty blog and see whats the current trend enables a lot of them to plan their own makeup these days. I have come across clients where I used to work before telling me of they did their makeup for their own wedding after reading and getting tips from lot many beauty bloggers.
So here are some tips for the DIY bride makeup,

DOs Bridal Makeup Tips:-

  1. If you have decided not to hire an artist, start planning and learning makeup at least a month before the wedding.
  2. Start investing in basic makeup and skin care products so that you can build up your trousseau slowly and steadily with a bit of research and help from an expert at the makeup counters (if you are lucky enough to find). You do not want to stick to one brand for skin care or makeup but have a mish mash of certain cult favorite products from each brand.
  3. Invest in good tools for makeup. That means brushes, makeup accessories, makeup cleansers etc. as they are as important as makeup itself.
  4. Refer to youtube videos for understanding application of products and which product does what. You tube gurus like Pixiwoo, Michelle Phan, Gossmakeup artist,Lisa Eldridge, Eve Pearl etc. have touched the lives of many and so they could be the best sources of free makeup lessons.
  5. Submit yourself to any makeup event happening in any brand at that time. Generally do this at least 2-3 months prior to the wedding. You may end up with a free lesson on purchase of makeup products and may learn something that you can incorporate in your makeup.
  6. Some makeup academies also teach personal makeup and so do makeup artists which can be more educational and affordable than telling someone to do makeup on the wedding day. This is good because makeup could be a permanent part of your life after you muster the confidence to apply.
  7. Practice application of the hardest ones like eye liner and mascara well in advance. Eyes new to mascara become droopy and can mimic sleeplessness or make one look drunk. Liners gone wrong create a distinct line in between lashes and eye lids and can show clearly in wedding cameras from a far off distance.
  8. If you are not confident stick to nudes and earthy colors. They can never go wrong.
  9. Invest in palettes. You always get more than what you would pay for. NYX cosmetics and Inglot make really affordable palettes that anyone can use and don’t go heavy on pockets. Even Inglot makes amazing brushes.

Dont’s – Bridal Makeup Tips:-

  1. Do not buy makeup products randomly.
  2. Do not choose too bold colors or too metallic colors that look good in glossies and on fashion shows. Makeup always looks different in different lights and pictures in magazines are re-touched 90% with 10% effort of the makeup artist.
  3. Do not go on random suggestions given by friends and all. Your friend may have different tastes in makeup or different skin color or tone. Trying to match with her is the perfect epitomy of idiocy.
  4. Do not do too many trials and attend too many seminars. This can create confusion rather than outcome.
  5. Bright pink and bright orange may not even be the last colors one must choose while being a bride.
  6. Do not buy foundation with an SPF (unless it is Guerlain or Shiseido) as the sunscreen in them flashes back and gives a white deadly ghostly appearance. Same with light reflecting concealers like YSL Touche Eclat.
  7. Do not buy dark and overpowering lip colors. Stick to softer versions and in case you have already purchased darker colors before reading this article, use them sparingly.
Recommended products for a DIY bride (my suggested list) :-
Concentrate on colors that are easy to wear and can be worn everyday for casual or formal events. Just adding a touch of glitter or shimmer to daily done makeup can make it a special one at the D-day. Its all about the aura bride-to-be exudes and has got minimal contribution of makeup into all this.
