Carrots, cantaloupe, mangoes, pumpkin, and apricots are all good sources of beta carotene and can be your substitute if you cannot have sweet potatoes.
Do not ever doubt the capabilities of lentils. These tiny yet mighty legumes are very rich source of protein, iron, zinc, and biotin. This makes it a great staple for vegetarians. There is a huge variety in lentils. You can have them daily and yet not bored with eating various lentils. Moreover you can cook them in different manners to satiate your taste buds.
