5 Reasons Why Your Hair Stops Growing

“My hair does not grow beyond a certain length” is quite a common hair complaint. Many of us want nothing more than long & healthy locks. The hair growth cycle typically consists of three stages; regeneration, degeneration, and a rest cycle. However, this cycle can be disrupted which causes your hair to cease its growth. Several factors contribute to little or no hair growth, however most are them do not cause medical concerns. Let us go through the factors responsible for stunted hair growth.

Genetics

Everyone has a unique hair growth cycle contributed solely to genetics. We all have an individual hair cycle growth phase in which the hair has a potential to reach its longest. This is the maximum length that hair could possibly reach without being cut or damaged. The growth phase is largely determined by genetics and typically lasts between two and six years Even if you let your hair grow forever, it would stop growing eventually.

Age

Just like our body, our hair becomes weaker as we get older. Your hair growth phase also often shortens as you get older. While your hair may have been able to grow for three years before, it may only be able to grow for one after a certain age. Consequently, your scalp also starts to secrete less oil which can cause hair to be more prone to damage and breakage.

Underlying Health Issues

Pay attention to the signs from your body as it has a way of telling us when something isn’t right. A sudden rise in hair loss or breakage could alarm for medical attention. Hormonal deficiency or overproduction of certain hormones can lead to hair loss.

getting rid of blemishes

Unhealthy skin conditions of the scalp such as dermatitis, eczema, psoriasis of the scalp and even allergies can cause scarring & inflammation that makes it difficult for hair to grow. In addition, Seborrheic dermatitis (dandruff) and fungal infections such as ringworm also restrict hair growth.

Improper Hair Care

Using wrong hair care tools for a significant period of time can also lead to stunted hair growth. Apart from the obvious damage that can result from excessive blow-drying, flat ironing and pressing the hair, using poor hair tools such as smaller toothed combs, the wrong types of brushes and even fractured bobby pins and hair combs can also result in damage to your hair.

Your hair stops growing due to lack of moisture as well. Hair that is properly moisturized will have a nice elasticity to it and will be less likely to break, thereby allowing you to retain what you grow. Improper use or overuse of heat also leads to dryness which in turn causes breakage.

It May be Time for a Trim

It is a common myth among women that their tresses won’t grow if they cut their hair. This however is not the case. A regular trim is absolutely necessary if you want to keep your hair healthy & damage free.

Severely damaged hair, split ends and heat damage are the types of damage that cannot be reversed. Once the damage has been done, the only option is to cut the damaged hair. Trim the split ends & use the right hair mask and treatment to keep your hair nourished.
