- Take off the nail polish completely once in a while & let your nails breathe
How Do I Whiten Yellow Nails?
Let us take a look at some of the ways to get rid of yellow nails.
Hydrogen Peroxide & Baking Soda:
Hydrogen peroxide has whitening properties while baking soda is good for bleaching & exfoliation. Simply mix one part hydrogen peroxide to three parts water in a small bowl & soak your nails in it for 10 minutes. Then rinse off properly & apply amoisturizer as hydrogen peroxide can dehydrate your nails. You can also make a paste by mixing 1 tablespoon of hydrogen peroxide with two & a half tablespoon of baking soda. Apply this paste on your nails using a toothbrush or a cotton swab and let it stay on for some time. Then rinse off with water and moisturize.
Lemon juice is natural bleach which is very effective on yellow nails. Simply take a lemon & rub it on your fingernails for a few minutes. Alternatively, you can also fill a bowl with fresh lemon juice & soak your nails in it for 10-15 minutes. Gently scrub with a soft toothbrush & then rinse off with lukewarm water. Complete by applying a moisturizer.
Denture Cleaning Tablets:
These tablets which are used to whiten the dentures contain sodium bicarbonate and citric acid, which help remove stains. Simply follow the package directions & dissolve 2-3 tablets in a bowl filled with lukewarm water. Â Soak your stained nails in the water for 15 minutes. Then pat dry & finish by applying some moisturizer.
 Whitening Toothpaste:
Just as whitening toothpaste whitens your teeth; it can also be used to whiten the yellow stained nails. In fact, a whitening toothpaste with baking soda and peroxide is even better.  Simply apply some toothpaste to your nails & rub gently. Then scrub them using a nail brush. Wash off the toothpaste with lukewarm water & moisturize. You may also use teeth whitening strips to get rid of the yellow stains.
Tea Tree Oil:
Sometimes fungal infection also makes your nails yellow. In such cases, using tea tree oil really helps. It is a natural fungicide with antiseptic properties which help fight infection and restore the natural color of your nails. Simply massage your nails with pure tea tree oil. Leave it on for a few minutes, and then rinse off with lukewarm water. You can also apply the mixture of tea tree oil and olive oil on your nails to keep them healthy.
Fresh orange peels & juniper berries also help keep your nails healthy. Orange contains vitamin C that helps in removing the yellow stains from your nails. Simply rub your nails with fresh orange peel two or three times daily. You can also use a paste of dried orange peel powder and water on your nails. In addition, you can also apply a paste of crushed juniper berries & warm water on your nails to remove the yellow stains.
The yellow stains are present on the top layer of your nails. Light buffing helps in removing this layer. However, make sure that you do not buff too deeply or rigorously as it can instead weaken your nails. You can also use a buffing board to remove the exposed top layer that is stained.
Nail Whitening Pencil:
This comes to your rescue whenever you are in a hurry & need a quick fix. Simply apply the whitening pencil on top of your nails to get rid of the coloration & you are good to go!
Hope you find these methods useful the nest time you notice your nails are turning yellow!
