Bottle Gourd Kofta/Lauki/ghiya kofta recipe with picture and video tutorial

Lauki kofta were made at least once in fifteen days at my place. My Father loved them and we enjoyed having the koftas without the curry because before my mom use to cook the curry me and my brother  use to finish off all the koftas.They really taste great.After wards my mom starting hiding some kofta so that her curry doesn’t go waste.

Before starting let us know the various names of lauki so that it is easy for people from other place to identify the vegetable.

In India it is known as lauki,dudhi (दूदी) or ghiya (घीया) in Hindi,churakka (ചുരക്ക) in Malayalam,Jatilao in Assamese, lau in Bengali, Sora kaaya (సొర కాయ) in Telugu, dudhi-Bhopala (दुधी) in Marathi, sorekayi in Kannada, and suraikkaai (சுரைக்காய் colloq. sorakkay) in Tamil.(From www.wikipedia.com)

Here is my mom recipe of lauki kofta.
Serves-2-3
Preparation and cooking-30 -40 minutes.
2 cups lauki grated(I took around 500gms)
2-3 chopped green chillies
1inch grated ginger
1/2cup chic peas flour(besan ) for binding the kofta
2 medium size onion
3 tomatoes
few pieces of chawes (around 4-5)
1/2 cup cream
Chilli powder – 1 tsp
Turmeric powder – ½ tsp
Garam masala powder – 1 tsp
coriander powder
cumin seeds1/2 tsp
Kitchen King Masala -1/2 tsp(optional)
Oil for deep frying
Salt to taste
Method and preparation:-
For the Kofta:-
Step1-Peel the lauki and grate them.If your lauki is fresh and clean then you can grate with the peel.It is good for the body.(Many people squeeze the water out of the lauki but I don’t do that as it takes out the proteins and vitamins from the lauki.If you want you can do that)
Step2-Add chillies, ginger and salt, red chili powder, coriander powder  in the grated lauki.
Step3-Add besan in it an mix it well.
Step4-Make small round balls out of the mixture.If you find the mixture quite watery then you can add more besan into it.
Step5-Deep fry these balls until they are golden brown and koftas are cooked properly.
For the gravy:-
Step1-Take onion, tomatoes , cashews and ginger.You can add 3-4 garlic cloves also but I didn’t use them.Make a paste of these.
Step2-Take a pan and 1tbsp. of any cooking oil in it.
Step3-Add cumin seeds and wait till they crackle.
Step4-Add the onion , tomato paste and add salt, red chilli powder, coriander powder, haldi powder , Kitchen king masala in it.
Step5-Add cream and mix well.If you don’t have the cream then add beaten milai(boiled milk cream ) in it.You can go without the cream also but then the gravy wont be thick and color full.
Step6-Simmer the gravy for few minutes and add the koftas in it.
Serve hot with rice , paratha or chapati.:)
