Clinique Clarifying Lotion-Type 3 for Combination Oily Skin Review

Clinique Clarifying Lotion-Type 3 for Combination Oily Skin

I am blessed with oily, acne and blemish prone skin 😉 and am constantly in search of those skin care products which can do wonders….ok chalo let me lower my expectations-at least a decent job of clarifying and mattifying my oil factory oops… skin. It was a time of June 2012 when I ran out of my The Body Shop Tea Tree Toner and was struggling with greasiness, acne and orange rind like skin of mine with large open pores. I was in search of stronger toner to combat these skin problems.

I’ve read several rave reviews on Clinique products, and I desperately wanted to try their 3 step skincare programme based on my skin type. The biggest problem on my path to a clearer skin the Clinique way was my town!!! Yes my town.. I live in such a place where getting Clinique Products is itself an issue. Obviously I was left with no other choice but to compromise on some other product. But call it destiny 😛 or what I got a chance to attend some training programme in Gurgaon sponsored by my office. I reached Gurgaon, primarily to purchase Clinique products and yes of course to attend the training also ;-)!!! and after a day or two I visited Ambience Mall after thorough research and ensuring that there is one Clinique counter at Debenhams and approached one staff there. Although I was aware of my skin type but just out of curiosity and to follow the proper channel I got my skin analyzed to see which skincare range would suit my skin. I was told that mine is skin type 3 i.e. combination to oily skin according to their test which is categorized through our pore size, sensitivity and skin concerns – everything from pimples, to dehydration, to aging, to uneven skin tone. I was advised to get a set of tailor made products for Skin Type 3 as per their renowned 3 step skin care programme.

I found cleanser to be pricey and I was very much satisfied with my Cetaphil cleanser, hence I decided to purchase Dramatically Different Moisturizing Gel and Clarifying lotion Type 3 when that pretty Clinique lady convinced me that all I need is to dedicate 3 minutes, presumably 1 minute for each product, twice a day and it will   help in keeping oil at bay, will improve my skin texture by pore minimization and will also keep acne production in check.

Andha kya chahe? Do ankhein 🙂 I immediately purchased the lotion and gel in the biggest packaging available. I am using it since mid-June 2012 and I think it is the right time to do a review of it so let’s read how it worked on my skin.

My experience with Clinique Clarifying Lotion-Type 3:

Iam religiously applying it twice a day since last year, after washing my face with face wash or cleaning it with an oil free cleanser. I apply it by dampening a cotton wool pad with and sweeping it across my face and throat. It felt refreshing immediately but for 30 seconds or so it stings my skin a bit ummm like a tingly sensation (but Iam a great optimist…this stinging didn’t hurt me rather it gives me a feel that the lotion is working and cleaning my skin deep down;-).) I see a lot of dirt coming out on the cotton pad even after cleaning-which is the most remarkable thing about this cleanser that it sucks out the tiniest specks of dirt from my face and make it sure that I have absolutely nothing on my skin before applying my DDMG.

I remember that at Clinique counter when I enquired about the dirt that lady told me that actually this grim is not dirt or dust but is a layer of dead cell which the lotion has exfoliated and stripped out. This lotion did keep the oil away from my T-zones for a decent time and it makes sure that my oily areas remain oil free without drying the non-oily area for 2-3 hours.

My skin feels tight but sadly this product has done absolutely nothing for my large open pores. My orange rind like skin texture is very much here with all its glory L

What I like about Clinique Clarifying Lotion-Type 3:

  • Cleans out any traces of dirt or oil.
  • Does not dry out the skin.
  • Goes a long way since small quantity is all one need each time.
  • Keeps acne in check since it contains Salicylic acid.
  • Effective oil control.
  • Good for blemish prone skin.

What I don’t like about Clinique Clarifying Lotion-Type 3:

  • No pump dispenser or stopper included which leads to product wastage.
  • Smells of alcohol and stings a bit.
  • Skin feels uncomfortably tight for some times after usage.
  • People with sensitive skin should avoid this product since it is one of those harsh/strong products which may not suit everybody.
  • Does absolutely nothing for pore minimization.
  • Expensive.
  • Not easily available.
  • Once I transferred some amount of toner in a small bottle when I was going to my parents place. But during that visit I completely forgot to use this stuff. After 15 days or so when I took out that bottle to use it, I found relatively lesser quantity…so I guess may be-may be this product vaporizes over a period of time… product as expensive as this one vaporizes??? Not good for your pocketL.

Rating: 3.5/5.

Will I repurchase it?

I am waiting to finish it off…once its over I’ll get La-Rochey Posay Astringent and Effaclar duo which I am eyeing since long….so in near future Iam not gonna re-purchase it.

Thanks for help me save the cash! :p

  2. I was planning to buy type 1 for this winter…but not sure if it would suit me or not… 🙁
I think i should stay happy with my TBS facial cleanser..

  3. There was a point of time when I was dying to check this out but soon realized that the Clinique toner has been receiving tons of bad reviews :-/ I have similar skin type as urs Ruhee/ How did u find the TBS toner? Btw…very nicely reviewed  The vaporizing part is strange 😯

      • I knowww! N also …am trying my best to stay away from toners that contain alcohol. Recently got a new one from a herbal brand I’ve never tried before 😀 Let’s see how it fares

    • TBS toner is also a bit hyped product Nafisa but I swear its far better than their tea tree facial foam which is absoultely worthless. I dont know why these renowned companies make such dud products? And I agree with Ana about hype of this product thats why I was so much tempted to get a one.

  4. Great review which is nicely pen down by you girl. This is a perfect review which is having a balance of both the pros and cons of the products. I have gone through several reviews of this product on the web but either those were either too much biased on favouring this one or totally against it as if there is not even a single pro of this lotion. But after reading your write-up I think iam aware of both the advantages as well as disadvantages of the product. Good work dear keep it up. Kindly review Clinique dramatically different moisturising gel also because in our wise she blog there is a review on lotion which is meant for dry skin. Iam also a victim of oily skin just like you and I want to know your experience of DDMG also since I’ve to get a decent moisturiser for this winters. Please guide me.

  5. Real review by a real person in a real blog:-* :-* :-* That’s why I love wise she. See people how real and true this experience feels. I have exactly the same experience with this dud product. Don’t know how in many blogs I have read so many rave review for this absolute mediocre lotion which does nothing, it’s just as good as a cleanser and nothing else. Anamika you are really doing a great job by giving reviews of these standards in your blog. Your blog is not blindly praising any particular brand but giving a genuine opinion about a particular product. Love love love your blog, which is rich in contents and good reviews. I thoroughly enjoy and gain experiences after going through your wonderful blog.Hats off!!!!!

    • We can not do anything for our pore size Chandni…sad but true. And if you have dry skin then run as f away as possible from the one who is advising you to get this product.

  6. This stuff destroyed my face! I know many ppl rave about it n that’s why I picked up the whole 3 step kit but it fared horribly on me! I had breakouts the size of amazon! When I told the ppl at Clinique, they said it was normal n that it was just all the gunk coming out n would subside. But it didn’t for me 🙁 luckily Clinique gave me back all of my money 🙂 love Clinique for that 🙂

  7. I use the same but not on daily basis , it is little too much for daily use 🙁 🙁
but if we alternate it with normal toner it is great stuff 😀
    i use it twice a week 🙂
you did a great review Ruhee

    • Rashmi…iam a great fan of ur blog and ur lotd posts. Compliment from you is an unbelievable thing for me. Thanx from the bottom of my heart. <3
