Easy Dum aalloo recipe with step by step pictures


Dum Aloo is also known as Aloo Dum Pukht.It is one of the popular recipe and is made in variety of styles.In this baby potatoes are simmered in creamy and aromatic gravy.It is easier than making koftas and is a wonderful treat for your guest.


Small potatoes 12-14(You can scoop put small potatoes from bigger one too)
1 inch ginger shredded
3-4 medium sized tomatoes
1 large onion 
2 green chillies chopped
2tbsp cooking oil and oil for frying
1/4tsp cumin seeds
1/4tsp turmeric powder(Haldi)
1 tsp coriander powder
Cream or milk cream
Cashew nuts(kaaju) 50 gm or small half cup(Soak then in water half an hour before)
Fresh curd 50 grams(half cup) (optional)
Red chilli powder 1/4tsp
Garam masala 1/4tsp (optional)
Salt to taste
Chopped coriander for garnishing


Step1:Boil potatoes in hot water and add salt in it.When  half cooked let them cool and peel them off.Prick them with a fork.Make sure that they are not  over cooked.

Step2:Deep fry the potatoes until golden brown. Drain and set aside.If you are not interested in frying then you can microwave them too.

Step 3-Make a paste of tomatoes,green chillies,ginger ,onion and cashew nuts and add little water in it.Make a paste of these ingredients.

Step4:Take a pan and add oil in it.Add cumin seeds when hot.Add turmeric powder and coriander powder in it.Make sure you add these powders in slow fame.Now add the tomato paste and cream/milai  in it.

Step5:When the masala starts leaving oil.Add blended curd in it and stirr it continuously for five  minutes.

Step 5-Add the fried potatoes ,cook for 5-10 minutes more and keep the gravy light and thick according to your choice.You can add little water if you want to keep the gravy light.

Step6:Garnish with chopped corrainader.

Serve with chapati,paratha or rice.
