This is a quick and easy recipe for those who have kept fast and are not interested in spending too much time in the kitchen.I like making it during Navratri and as hubby dear also likes them I do not have to make separate thing for him. I have never kept navratri fast in my entire like but this time I felt like doing them .I don’t know the reason because I am some one who doesn’t even visit temples for months .
Coming back to sabudana vada hardly requires fifteen minutes of preparation and if you have boiled potatoes with them then I think it will take just ten minutes of your time.It is an easy recipe but certainly not an healthy recipe but it keeps me full almost for 6-7 hours .After having the vadas I do not have to think about food all the time.

   Ingredients for Sabudana vada

1 cup sabudana(Soak sabudaana for 5hrs in water with salt and leave it aside.)
1 medium size boiled potato(Mash it up)
1 tps jeera(cumin seeds)
2 tps seing dana powder (Just roast the nuts and peel off the skin and grind to a coarse powder){optional}
salt to taste(Use sainda namak if you have kept fast)
4 Green chillies
1 small piece of ginger
9-10 curry leaves
Oil to fry
Step 1– Grind green chillies, ginger and curry leaves and grind it into a paste. You can add little red chilli powder if you want to have spicier and not on fast.
Step2 – When sabudana are soft add the potatoes, jeera , seing daana powder and curry leaves and ginger paste.

Step3 – Add salt and mix well(Consistency of the water should not be very tight and very sticky and watery.
Step4 – Give the mixture shape of a vada and fry it in hot oil until they are golden in colour.
Serve with tomato ketchup or coriander mint chutney. It is a great dish to be served during evening tea as well.
It is a simple easy cooking recipe which every one will enjoy
.P.S:-
1If you add more potatoes then vadas break down.
2. Do not flip the vada until one side is brown .Chances of vada breaking down is less if you flip just twice.
3. Do not put spoon in the middle of the vada otherwise it will break down.

  1. actually Poornima..it requires lot of oil or ghee..so more oil more tastier the sabu daana will be..

i don prefer adding more oil into them so i cook them in microwave and then add them with the vegetables..that way it turns out little better.

  2. the khichdi turns out like that if the sabudana is not done properly…ideal thing to do it soak it overnight if you need to make it in the morning and add water so that it comes just to the level of sabudana and then keep it covered…..if you dont have that much time, soak them in lukewarm water. The water level should be same as above….it will still need 2-3 hrs to get done properly.

  3. Sounds yummm..I have always had bad experience with sabudana..so I never make this or khichdi. The khichdi always turns iggly wiggly and not nice and proper..Any ideas to avoid this?

  4. eve if i soak them ad use less oil they become little saggy…tried it many times Ishikaaaa:(
