Floss 101 | Why To Floss Your Teeth
By now, I am sure that everyone has heard the Singing dentist singing and propagating about oral hygiene practices. What do you think consists a good oral hygiene routine? Did flossing come to your mind?
If not, today I am going to create some awareness regarding what flossing your teeth is, how it is done and why itâ€™s so important to do it.
Flossing involves wrapping a piece of soft string (called floss) around your fingers and navigating it up and down between the teeth and below the gum-lineÂ to remove the plaque and bacteria that cause gum disease. Basically, brush cleans the external surfaces of the teeth and floss cleans between the surfaces of the teeth. Both are important oral hygiene practicesÂ and complimentary to each other.
Use a dental floss or another product specifically made for oral flossing like a dental pick, pre-threaded flosser, tiny brushes that reach between the teethÂ orÂ wooden plaque remover. After you have chosen the option that best suits you, follow the following steps and stick with the habit for life.
- Pull 18 to 24 inches of dental floss from the floss dispenser.
- Wrap the ends of the floss around your index and middle fingers.
- Hold the floss tightly around each tooth in a C shape; move the floss back and forth in a push-pull motion and up and down against the side of each tooth.
Why to not skip on floss?
First things first-
The American Dental Association (ADA) suggests that flossing before you brush makes brushing more effective as a toothbrush’s bristles can’t adequately clean between the teeth or under the gums. Floss is specifically made to remove plaque from the tight spaces between the teeth and under the gums.
Tartar should be far far-
Plaque is a sticky film that coats your teeth. It contains bacteria and after sugary treats can release acids that attack tooth enamel. Plaque hardens over time to form tartar, a thick deposit that only the dentist can remove with a scraper. Tartar buildup can lead to tooth decay andÂ gingivitis: red, swollen gums that are the first stage of gum disease. Floss gets between your teeth and gums removing all the food particles that can lead to plaque buildup.
Smell fresh like a daisy-
Build up of dental plaque will eventually release bad smell from your mouth. This is why some people may suffer from bad breath (halitosis). If you love smelling and feeling fresh, brush and floss daily!
Floss saves you from money loss!
Dental problems unlike other health issues are more or less avoidable. If you get your teeth checked regularly, you will save yourself from all the trouble and costs involved in fixing your teeth. Everyone knows that dental procedures can cost you a lot. Sure professional dental tools are well-advanced to fix the most severe medical issues but if you ask any dentist for the most effective and cost-efficient tools for oral hygiene, they will give you a toothbrush, a toothpaste and a box of floss.
Flossing will prevent other diseases-
Extensive research has revealed that the bad bacteria dwelling in an unhealthy mouth can lead to other systemic diseases (conditions that affect multiple organs and body systems) like heart disease, diabetes and respiratory illness etc. In order to prevent these, healthcare professionals encourage patients to brush and floss daily.
