How To Treat An Itchy Scalp In Winters

Dry and itchy scalp is a common problem faced during the winter season. It is characterized by white powdery flakes & is caused due to dehydrated sebaceous glands which are responsible for producing the natural oil for our scalps. You can get an itchy scalp due to a variety of reasons such as dandruff, excessive dirt from air, excessive sweating, fungal infections, etc. We take a look at the various ways in which you can treat an itchy scalp.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar is one of the most effective method to treat an itchy scalp. It contains powerful antibacterial, antifungal & anti-inflammatory properties that prevent all the bacterial, fungal and viral activities on your scalp. It also balances the pH levels of the scalp & acts as a natural clarifier. Take ½ a cup of apple cider vinegar and add half a cup of water to this. You can use a spray bottle for spraying the contents on the scalp and the hair. Cover your head with a shower cap and allow to saturate for at least fifteen minutes before washing it off.

Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil has anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties that help treat scalp problems. It unclogs sebum blocking the hair follicles and also removes the excess oil and other dirt particles to make your hair shiny and healthy. Dilute tea tree oil with some olive or sweet almond oil or water and massage on your scalp. Cover all area of your scalp and leave it on for fifteen minutes. Make sure to dilute tea tree oil adequately before application as it can cause severe burns on the skin otherwise.

Aloe Vera is a cooling and moisturizing herb which works amazingly for your scalp. It removes the dead skin cells from the scalp and destroys bacteria. It has antiseptic, anti-bacterial, and anti-fungal properties & works by cooling the affected area. In fact, Aloe gel does so much more for your hair than just treat the scalp. Adding aloe to your daily shower routine can improve the overall health of your hair. When shopping for aloe vera products, look for ones that contain a minimum of 50 percent aloe vera gel. Take aloe vera gel (either straight from the aloe leaf or pre-packaged). Massage it into your scalp before shampooing & leave it in your hair for at least 20 minutes. After some time, rinse it out.

Lemon Juice

Lemons have antiseptic properties which revitalize and heal the scalp and help prevent further itching. It is very effective when dealing with dandruff. Apply lemon juice on your hair and scalp with cotton ball. Keep it only for 5minutes. If you keep it for a long time the acid residing in lemon may damage your hair.. If the problem is mild, you can dilute it with water first. Leave it on for 5-10 minutes, then rinse it out.

Peppermint Oil

Peppermint oil too is a great remedy for dry and itchy scalp. It is not only very rich in antioxidants, but also contains anti-inflammatory, antifungal, and most importantly antiseptic agents. It provides a cooling and numbing on the scalp. Mix a few drops of peppermint oil along with some warm water and apply on the scalp. Rub with your fingers in circular motion so that the oil gets absorbed on to the skin. Wash off after this.

Baking soda restores the pH balance of the scalp & destroys the fungal and bacterial action that causes the itching and dryness. It removes the dead skin cells on the scalp and stops itching. Make a paste with water and apply on the scalp. Leave it on for 30 minutes and wash off.

Our very own Coconut oil Coconut Oil is an excellent anti-fungal agent and moisturizer. Take some coconut oil and warm it. Massage it into the scalp and hair, leave for some time & then wash it off. The massaging action will increase the blood circulation to the scalp and the scalp will be well nourished thereby reducing dryness and itchiness..
