Hello everyone! My name is Vani, I am a 22 year old ΓΒ from Kerala who is studying in Delhi now. I would like to tell all you beautiful people about my makeup journey. π
Throughout my senior school days to about one year back, my definition of dressing up was putting on black Streetwear eye pencil on my eyes and some lotus lip balm in Raspberry. These two products used to make me feel all dressed up and ready to go! I then shifted to Coimbatore for my studies and used to do a winged liner every day, again with the street wear pencil. The pencil would smudge by the lunch break but I would just wash my face with a face wash and wipe off the smudges with a towel. Even this simple make up routine started to seem really over dressed among the girls of my class, as most of them liked to keep it simple and considered Γ’β¬ΛhomelyΓ’β¬β’ as beautiful. Soon I started skipping my makeup routine once in a while and then it was stopped altogether. And a few years passed like this.
My best friend right from my school days, Vidya (Muah to Vidya), was studying in the same city but in a different college. Vidya used to pester me a lot over the years about the way I did not bother much about my looks. She is someone who never steps out without ironing her side bangs and doing up her eyes and face beautifully. I used to argue with her that makeup looked good on her because she had flawless skin and would look terrible on my blemished and acne prone skin.
One day in my final year of college, I had a sleepover in her hostel with her and was getting ready to go out. I got dressed, tied up my hair in a pony tail and was ready to go! I watched Vidya complete her makeup routine in flat five minutes and commented on the amount of makeup she uses! She gave me a scornful look and made me sit down and made my face her canvas. She first applied lacto calamine on my face, and then Lakme compact powder. She then dabbed on some brownish golden eye shadow on my eye lids with her fingers and topped it with a winged black eye liner. Then came the ultimate step, she dabbed some blush on the apples of cheeks. Well, that was too much! Γ’β¬ΕGirls like me canΓ’β¬β’t use blush, Vidya!!!Γ’β¬Β, I told her. She just asked me to shut up and carried on with her work. She then took her straightening iron and pulled out my side bangs and straightened them. After this she asked me to look at the mirror and I was astounded. I looked so different, so good. I looked like one of Γ’β¬ΛthoseΓ’β¬β’ girls who look so well turned out! And it all looked so natural and not at all over done. We then went out to meet a friend and I got lots of compliments from him, my spirits were soaring all day!
That is the effect a little makeup, a little care and effort, can do for your spirits. I got really hooked on after that day, I started reading beauty blogs online and buying makeup for myself. I started doing up my eyes and putting a bit of colour on my lips too. Thus began my makeup journey. I have now hoarded quite a lot of makeup, mainly eye and lip products and a few blushes <blush blush J>. Among these, my favourites and the ones I reach out to most often are:
- Faces eye pencil in solid black
- Faces eye pencil in gray, I use it along with black sometimes to create a smokey look
- Maybelline baby lips in Pink Lolita, even a little colour on the lips does so much for your ΓΒ looks.
- Mac lipstick in See sheer, I love how it suits me well without making itself very obvious. I have only a lipstick sample which I bought from thebodyneeds2.com and want to buy the full sized one soon.
- Lakme Eyeconic mascara. If there is one one thing you want to do to enhance your looks, I would say use a mascara.
- Elle 18 lipstick in Rusty Γ’β¬β I love it! ItΓ’β¬β’s one of my first lipsticks and it suits me so well! Please tell me of a colour dupe in another brand if you know about one.
I hope you all enjoyed reading about my makeup journey and please forgive me if it was a teeny weeny bit too long. Thanks a lot! Love you gals a lot and thank you for all those lovely reviews π

Vani..u got rid of all the acne also after following beauty blogs ?
Not really. What really worked for me was treatment by a dermatologist in Coimbatore. She prescribed a combination of an anti-dandruff shampoo, some ointments and a tablet to be had everyday. This pretty much cleared all my acne up and gave my skin new life. Its been more than a year now and I still have some acne but nothing major and very little compared to before.
(8x shampoo, facelin, benzoyl peroxide and an isotretenoin tablet which should be had only under medical supervision)
thas great..i am glad u took the right step .sometime it one has to run to the doc.
Yeah and thank God it worked… I had many trials and errors with docs before that and not to mention countless over the counter products and home treatments. Acne can take a toll on you in teenage especially when everyone else has clear skin.
But i learnt a lot about maintenance and prevention from beauty blogs like about different cleasers, toners .. importance of sunscreen and how important is is to make sure skin is fully clean before sleeping.
I forgot to mention episoft facewash in my prescription list.
Zee raved about Episoft lotion as well.Read review here https://www.wiseshe.com/2012/10/episoft-cleansing-lotion-review.html
I have read it… Ive been a silent reader of this blog for a very long time π
You know… sometimes I feel that these moisturising face washes or face washes meant for dry skin work better for oily skin than the oily skin variants! Wonder if it is just me?
really cute post… i also understood the power of mascara and blush much later π
Thanks a lot Ife π I totally agree..! <3
You look great ! π Such a frank and sweet account of your story π I have to try elle 18 rusty and peach kiss – I rarely get to find these shades online. *thumbs up * :rock-n-roll:
Thank you so much Arja! Really! π
I love rusty a lot lot lot…. I havn’t tried peachy kiss yet but I will! π
I first bought rusty online and then lost it! And could not find it again anywhere. I finally found it in a shop in Kochi… I think lipsticks willa lways be in stock there because most people don’t wear lipstick, only the younger generations do. Yes, we are changing it π
Vani i hope it doesn’t expire out in the store itself.
Oh I should check that from next time… these things are seriously slow moving there!
Arja. i have noticed that you keep motivating people π Thas such an awesome quality you have.
Amazing story Vani and reading blogs and reviews from other beautiful women out there really help a lot in making decisions about makeup π π
