Anyone who reads my review on WiseShe knows that I am an ardent lover of red lip colours, stains, liners and really anything in the makeup world. 😛
While I transitioned from lip glosses to lip sticks a long while back, I have still been a little reticent to try lip liners because of my sheer laziness. I mean, come on! Adding another step to my bare bones makeup routine is a little disconcerting.
But nevertheless, when I set my eyes on this brilliant red on Nykaa, I swear I heard angels sing in the background and I just HAD to pick it up! The fact that most makeup swatches on makeup portals are deceiving, just slipped my mind. 😛
Read on to see if this lip liner met my heavenly expectations. 😉

My take on Lakme 9 to 5 Lip Liner in Red Alert:
Ruby Woo is the cutest red I have ever seen in my life, and when I see anything akin to the same cool red I just have to jump it’s bones. I just can’t help myself! 😛
This lip liner is a perfect preparatory step before Ruby Woo, it matches the cool blue undertones that make the lip stick such a cult classic.
Just like the retro matte finish of Ruby Woo, this too is extremely unforgiving on the lips. It accentuates dry and flaky lips, so please don’t forget to exfoliate incredibly well before application.
The pigmentation is also incredible and single stroke opacity is achieved with ease. But too much of a good thing isn’t always great. It changes the tonality of all the lipsticks that I pair this with, making any of the warm colours look distinctly cool.
It lasts a decent 5-6 hours on its own and prolongs the wear of any lipstick I pair it with. But when paired with Ruby Woo, this stays smudge proof for my full 8 hour day, which is pretty darn awesome!
This lip liner comes with no ingredient list, which is always a red flag for me. The pricing may also be a tad bit steep for the quantity provided. I wish this were retractable so that so much of this incredible pencil wouldn’t be wasted on unnecessary sharpening, due to its creaminess.
What I like about Lakme 9 to 5 Lip Liner in Red Alert:
- Cool toned red
- Classy travel safe packaging
- Matte finish (akin to MAC’s Retro Matte finish)
- Transfer proof
- Lasts for a decent amount of time
- One stroke opacity
What I don’t like about Lakme 9 to 5 Lip Liner in Red Alert:
- Sharpening leads to unnecessary product wastage
- So creamy that it may need to be sharpened often
- Small pencil
- No ingredient list
- Can accentuate lip lines due to matte finish
- Can change the tone of lipstick due to strong pigmentation
Will I repurchase? Yes! I love this lip liner! It’s incredible!
Will I recommend to friends? Certainly! It’s a universally flattering shade.
