Lush Cosmetics Launches National Campaign with Greenpeace to demand protection for forests

Ahmedabad—On Wednesday shoppers will be encouraged by local retailer Lush Cosmetics to create a ‘pledge tree’ in their store window to highlight the issue of forest destruction for coal mining. Increasing demand for coal is leading to the wholesale destruction of forests in Central and Eastern India, in support of a national Greenpeace campaign, Lush is helping to highlight the issue by creating a unique work of art in all stores nationally.

The window featuring a tree trunk and the words “Fools for Forests” will be completed and brought to life by local people who will be asked to show their support by filling in their personal ‘green pledge’ leaf to make more leaves on the tree, and then to sign a national petition asking the Ministry of Coal to stop destroying forests. Customers will then receive a tree sapling to plant themselves at home or in true gorilla gardening style on an unused patch of ground:

Why is Lush so concerned with our forests?  Increased demand for coal in India, is causing the destruction of our last remaining forests in Central and Eastern India , forcing forest dependent communities off their land, and causing wildlife habitat loss  to make room for more coal mines. .

  • India’s Forest Cover is close to 69.09 million hectares and accounts for 20.6% of the total geographical area of the country as of 2005
  • The total forest area diverted annually for mining during 1998-2005 is four-fold higher than what was diverted every year during 1980-97
  • 275 million rural people depend on forests for their livelihoods. It also includes 89 million tribal people.
  • From the period 1950 to 1991 mining has displaced around 25.5 lakh people. Not even 25 per cent of these displaced have been resettled.
