Must Have Indian Outfits

When I came to India and while I was in Kuwait I used to look down on Indian fashion.  I guess because I was never exposed to it and hence never developed a liking for it.  But 6 years down the line and I cannot think of a culture that has clothes more beautiful than ours.  Be it the saree or the salwar kameez, traditional outfits are a rich part of our culture and something every woman must own for both daily wear and to pass on as a legacy…

Salwar Kameez:

The salwar Kameez is a outfit that can be worn by a princess, by a beggar, can be made to look very sexy or very very modest.  When the salwar kameez was invented I guess it was made for modesty.  The duppatta to cover ones chest, a kurta long enough to cover the crotch area and rear and pants loose enough to be both comfortable and decent.

You can have variety of them in countless designs, materials, sizes and to suit all pockets.  Something simple to wear to college or a dressy one for a wedding or a night do. You can never go wrong with it since salwar kameez suits all occasions.

One style that you should absolutely not miss is the Anarkali.   It is a  Flowing frock style churidar suit with heavy pleats and simple ones with umbrella cut.  Anarkali churidar suitis a must have in the bridal trousseau.  The lovely fabrics,  exquisite color combinations and embroidery make them so desirable.   Heavily embroidered Anarkalis must be based on lighter fabrics like net so that the weight is balanced.  The Bollywood Anarkalis most often spotted are usually the creations of ace fashion designers such as Manish Malhotra, Sabyasachi Mukherjee and Tarun Tahliani.

Saree

Yet another outfit that makes a woman look graceful, stylish, elegant and sensuous.   It can be worn to give a very modest and conservative look and as well a flamboyant look.  It is awesome to see cloth woven in yards and yards but then draped to make the gorgeous Saree.   They come in materials like cotton, silk, banarasi, kanjivaram, calcutta cotton, bandhani, katha work, jardosi work, patola, paithani, chanderi, maheshwari, gadwal and many many more…

Must Have Indian Outfits+saree for todays woman

Many women invest in sarees and pass them down to their daughters like their bridal sarees and heavy mysore silks.  These can literally last for decades.  The saree is one piece of clothing that suits the women of any age, race, color and body-type.

Georgette, Chiffon or Chignon. Heavy Mysore Silk sarees for women on the heavier side.  Sarees with small or no border for shorter women.   Organza, Cotton, Tissue and Tussar Sarees for thin women as these gives a fuller effect.  Dark skinned women should generally buy dark colours like maroon, green, dark pink etc.  Some big names in designer sarees in India are – Satya Paul, Ritu Beri, manish Malhotra, tarun Tahiliani and Sabyasachi.

Dupatta

The dupatta is a scarf-like cloth that is worn over the shoulders with a salwaar-kamez.  The dupatta stands as a symbol of modesty in the Indian society.  You can find it in different fabrics, like cotton, silk, georgette, chiffon, and so on. Normally, it is worn keeping in mind the color combination of the salwar-kameez it one is wearing.

There are ample ways you can don the dupatta. It is normally worn across the shoulders and women drape one end of it over their head, when in front of elders, as a sign of respect. You can wrap it around your neck like a muffler or simply let it hang from one side of the shoulder or to keep in line with fashion draped over one shoulder, with the other end balanced in the crook of the other arm.

Ofthen when the dress is very simple, women glam it up by wearing a heavily embroidered dupatta over it.  Bridal dupattas are often very heavily embellished.  Todays teens and women wear the dupatta like a muffler over jeans and their tees.  It can dress up any outift making it look chic and tres modern !!!

Lehenga

Of all the ethnic Indian women attires I have seen I feel the most eye-catching one, perhaps, is the lehenga choli. It is teemed with a short or waist length blouse, known as the choli, and a dupatta.  I wore it for my christian wedding receiption and it is so very comfortable and outstanding..

The lehenga choli is popular as bridal attire and mostly worn in the colour red but today people are opting for multi-colored or pastel-shade lehengas.  It is heavily embellished and weighs upto 10 kgs and the prices can vary from 5,000 to 5 lakh rupees.

Though the lehenga is essentially a bridal dress, it does not mean that people cannot wear it during normal parties and festivities. In this case, the design of the lehenga varies and it may not be so heavily embellished.  Today’s young crowd have halter-neck blouses or backless cholis.   People just vary the design, color and embroidery of the ghagra to make it suitable for different occasions.
