Orly Nail Lacquer La Playa Review & NOTD

Orly Nail Lacquer La Play

Hello everyone!

Today, I have swatches and review of a nail lacquer from Orly called La Playa.

La Playa is a part of the 4-piece ¡Viva! Collection that Orly released for Summer 2010. This was a Latin inspired collection, so the colours would suit Indian skin tones as well.

About Orly Nail Lacquers:

At ORLY we never stop looking for the next big idea. By keeping hot on the heels of the latest trends, our talented team of color experts deliver the bright ideas, hot colors and bold textures our fans love. Color is the foundation of everything we do. It is our heart, and soul, and the reflection of our multi-faceted personality. Full of the classics, the revolutionary and time-tested fan favorites the ORLY Permanent Color Collection has something for everyone.

Formulated without DBP, Formaldehyde and Toulene.

Fun fact: Orly’s founder, Jeff Pink, is credited for the French manicure.

Colour: La Playa is a beautiful inky, navy blue creme. It’s dark, but even in dim lighting, you can figure out that it’s blue and not black. Though I like the colour, I have to admit that it’s not unique at all.

Dark blues work better with my skin tone than lighter ones. Bailamos from the same collection looked gorgeous in the swatches online. I figured it wouldn’t look too good on me, so I resisted buying it. But considering my love for teals, I might give in and get it someday.

Formula and Pigmentation: The formula was a tad thin but it’s pigmented enough. I get full coverage with a thin first coat and a thicker second coat.

Application: La Playa is easy to apply. The Orly brush handle is rubberised and contoured to give you a good grip and control. I’ve used up more than half of the polish though, so it’s become a bit difficult to get enough product onto the brush.

Staying power: The staying power is what keeps me from loving La Playa. If I forget to apply a basecoat and topcoat, I end up with major tip wear and even chips, within one or two days. So disappointing!

Availability: Orly polishes are pretty hard to find in India. A few websites had begun selling them a couple of years ago. But unfortunately, they don’t anymore. A lot of American nail polish suppliers that I used to buy from have also stopped shipping to India. The ones that still do, have atrocious shipping charges. So for Orly, we’re just left with eBay as an option.

What I like about Orly Nail Lacquer La Playa:

  • Beautiful navy blue creme
  • Smooth application
  • Good pigmentation
  • Rubberised brush handle

What I don’t like about Orly Nail Lacquer La Playa:

  • Chips quickly
  • Availability

Rating: 3.5/5

This is a good option if you’re looking for a basic navy creme. Just make sure you invest in a good base and top coat as well.

  1. Love ur nails Rhea!! I like the easy-grip handle of orly varnishes. Too bad this chips so easily 🙁 And funnily, i thot this was a unique shade of blue 😀 It looks like a velevetty, purple-tinged blue to me. Maybe it’s the lighting. Or maybe it’s just that am not that aware of nail paints in general 😛
