Orly Nail Lacquer Solid Gold

Metallic polishes are trendy, glamorous, festive attention-grabbers. But there’s something that can make them even better. A matte finish! Orly came out with a collection of three metallic matte polishes called the Metal Chic Collection in 2009. The finish of these lacquers was similar to those of the OPI Suedes that were really popular around that time. I have the gold polish from this collection, which is called Solid Gold.

Colour and finish: Solid Gold is a warm, burnt gold matte with silver shimmer. It’s a really cool shade: unique and edgy, without being over-the-top. I always get a lot of compliments when I wear this. Although I haven’t tried it with topcoat, I’m sure it would look good with that as well. I love the finish. It’s a true matte, not one of those rubbery-satin finishes which I really dislike.

Application: Matte nail polishes are a bit tricky to apply and you need to keep a few things in mind. Make sure that you remove any oily residue from your nails with acetone or vinegar. You also need to apply the polish quickly and carefully because of the fast dry time.

Orly Solid Gold NOTD

Orly Solid Gold has a thick formula  which may get streaky if you’re not careful, but you’ll get the hang of it after a few applications. Although these slight streaks would not be visible with a usual glossy polish, a matte finish highlights even the tiniest imperfections. I find it easier to apply thin coats. Also, the rubberised Orly handle gives a really good grip during application.

Pigmentation: No problems with pigmentation. Two thin coats will eliminate visible nail line and you’ll have full opacity.

Drying time: Like most matte nail polishes, Orly Solid Gold dries completely within a few minutes. This is my go-to polish when I need a new mani but I’m in a hurry. It dries quickly and goes with any outfit, because it’s almost a really fancy nude polish for Indian skin tones.

Longevity: Without base coat, Solid Gold chips within a day. And I don’t mean tip wear, I mean large chunks of the polish chipping. So I do recommend using a good basecoat with it.

What I Like About Orly Nail Lacquer Solid Gold:

  • Edgy colour that goes with almost any outfit
  • True matte finish
  • Super-quick drying time
  • Good pigmentation
  • Rubberised handle
  • Big-3 Free

What I Don’t Like About Orly Nail Lacquer Solid Gold:

  • Streaks a bit if not applied carefully
  • Chips within a day

Rating: 3.5/5

Overall, I like this polish, but I’m not crazy about it (although everyone that sees it on my nails loves it). I think Orly Solid Gold is a good buy if you like golds and mattes, and if the durability of your polish isn’t an issue for you.
