Hi Sweeties,

Today I want to review one of the best selling matte lip velvets from Rimmel London. It has not been released in India yet. You can get this from several international online shopping sites. This was the shade I was looking forward to try from this range, as I had checked its swatches online and loved those a lot. So let us check out the review and find out if this lip velvet could keep up to my expectations.

Shade- Burning Lava is very bright and bold deep red shade. This shade is very intimidating and may not be everyone’s cup of tea. It definitely looks glam and stunning and I see myself wearing this with winged liner and mascara. But I would be reaching out to this shade for parties for any occasion. If you are a big fan of pigmented red liquid lip color, then surely check this out. There is a shade Big bang from Rimmel Apocalips, that resembles Burning Lava but Big Bang is brighter and has orangish tones to it. It will suit all skin color I feel because of its neutral tones.

My Experience with  Rimmel London Apocalips Matte Lip velvet Burning Lava’

Pigmentation & Coverage- This shade is insanely pigmented from all 4 shades in this range. It imparts opaque coverage with one swipe and covers pigmentation quite well. I would rather call it a liquid lipstick. I need very less amount each time I use it. Though application is quite smooth, yet after sometime, this lipstick bleeds and gets messy at the corners of my lips. Check lip swatches to understand what I mean to say. If you have lip lines and chapped lips, this lipstick will be unforgiving and has tendency to seep into fine lines thus looking uneven.

Texture & Finish– Ok I think this is the most controversial point regarding this lip lacquer 😀 This lip velvet has velvety texture to it and glides easily on my lips. It has satin finish when I apply 1-2 layers. It refuses to settle down. With this shade, I feel it sets into semi matte finish after half an hour or so. But when I use very less amount and use it as a stain, it sets into matte finish within 5 minutes. Whenever I use it as a lip color, it has tendency to seep at the corners of my lips.

Though it is lightweight, it feels greasy as if I have applied some kind of oil on my lips. It definitely contains castor oil to impart a velvety finish but I feel a bit more oil has been added than required. I feel Rimmel should consider reformulating this range. This formula however is very hydrating for my lips, it keeps my lips healthy looking and moist for a long time.

Staying Power- As a lip color, it refuses to set and thus can bleed and needs to be blotted. As a stain, it stays for 4-5 hours. As a lip color, it gets messy and fades unevenly. So I prefer to use it as a lip stain most of the times. I would advise guys to use a matte lip liner underneath it to enhance its staying power. It is because of addition of extra amount of oil I feel, it refuses to set.

What I liked about Rimmel London Apocalips Matte Lip velvet Burning Lava?

  • It keeps my lips hydrated and supple for a long time.
  • Its insanely pigmented and imparts opaque coverage.
  • It is a deep red shade that would flatter all skin tones.
  • As a stain it sets into semi matte finish.
  • It is not a bit drying.
  • It is very lightweight and not sticky.
  • Stays for nearly 4-5 hours as a stain.

What I did not like about Rimmel London Apocalips Matte Lip velvet Burning Lava?

  • Not yet released in India.
  • It refuses to set on my lips.
  • Seeps into fine lines and looks uneven.
  • It does not set to complete matte finish even when used as stain.

Will I repurchase it? I also have meteoric matte and Orange-ology from the same range. I would not repurchase these because of their disappointing formula. Why god, why can’t we can have everything perfect?

My Overall Recommendation- From this range of matte lip velvets from Rimmel I would recommend to try the shade Burning Lava and Meteoric Matte to all. It feels very lightweight and non sticky and is intensely pigmented with creamy satin finish. However, it refuses to set because of oils present in it. As a stain it sets within 15 minutes to semi matte finish. It also has tendency to bleed and seep into fine lines. The shade where is a winner, formula wise it is so disappointing. So you might try one shade from this range to see how it works for you.
