Rimmel Match Perfection Cream Compact Foundation in 103 True Ivory Review

BB creams are a real godsend for problem-skin like mine. I get to enjoy some coverage for daily use with added skincare benefits. Of all the BB creams I’ve used, I loved the Rimmel one and I was checking out new launches at the counter on my next visit when I spotted this. I wasn’t looking to buy foundation since the one I was using was brilliant, but what caught my fancy was that this was displayed on a matching blue rack and labeled “ BB Cream Compact”. I thought this would be similar to the Bourjois one that is a BB cream that comes in a compact form as well. After I bought it, I scanned the packaging and looked online but the word “BB” (if it can be called a word :-P) was nowhere to be seen! A bit more research online revealed that this is just a regular foundation and has nothing to do with BB creams. Hmph! :smug:

My experience with Rimmel London Match Perfection Cream Compact Foundation in 103 True Ivory:

Packaging: It comes in a square plastic case that opens up to reveal the product. The slim tray that contains the foundation lifts up to reveal a medium-sized mirror and a perforated compartment that houses a sponge applicator. It’s quite thoughtless that the mirror is beneath the foundation since this is meant to be used on-the-go for touch-ups and you have to keep lifting the tray and going back and forth to pick up product :-/ Also, since there is no lever or gap or anything at all to lift the tray, I found myself struggling to lodge my nail between the tray and the sponge compartment to get it to open. It was only after many uses that I realized that if you pull back the lid to its maximum angle, the tray automatically lifts up 😀 The sponge is soft and flexible and is slightly textured to help buff the foundation. I’ve washed it many times and it seems pretty durable but quite impossible to get it looking completely clean and white once used.

Shade Description: This comes in 6 shades but the shade selection is sooo confusing :hypnotized: Many shades look similar and I had a hard time trying to pick one. I have medium skin tone that’s around Mac NC40 the SA matched me to 103 True Ivory (even she seemed a bit baffled while swatching). When I first applied it , the color seemed to look a bit ashy on my strongly yellow skin, but soon settled down to mimic my tone.

Application: Since this comes with a latex sponge, the obvious mode of application seemed just that. But since I detest sponges I tried using it with a flat-top kabuki brush (Sigma F88). I would scrape the brush again and again but I found that the brush did not succeed in picking up the thick, creamy formula and depositing it onto my skin. So next, I tried using a flat foundation brush (Sigma F60) but again I simply could not get the foundation to spread and had to tug at my skin. :struggle: I’ve heard that this product works well with fingers and it kinda did when I tried but it seemed unsanitary to dip fingers into the pan each time. Plus, it was really messy with foundation getting into my nails and smearing all over the packaging and what-not and the whole purpose of buying a compact foundation was lost. 😛

Finally, having given up all hope I turned to the sponge. The sponge is quite thin and as I’d expected it seemed to drink up a lot of product. I was afraid I was gonna hit pan after just two uses :-/ It did spread the foundation to some extent, but it left me with dry patches (all sponges do that to me).

After several attempts, I figured out that the best way to use this product is with a wet brush or wet sponge and to use it over a primer or a good base. It seems like an obvious tip, but generally my skin does not require a lot or priming or moisturizing and most products glide well without much effort. I also found it to apply well over damp skin. When my skin is freshly cleansed and slightly damp, the sponge seems to work well in blending the foundation. If you have dry skin, do make sure to moisturize well to aid in even application.

Coverage: You see, I have polka-dot skin. What’s that you ask? ?:-) Well, it’s simply a nice way of saying my face is covered in spots and blemishes 😥 So I need atleast medium coverage and I’ve had good luck with cream foundations before. To my utter disappointment, this gives very sheer coverage. It barely masked my imperfections. :pain: I mean, even the “so-called” BB creams you get in India do a better job. Even when I tried layering the foundation, the coverage was next to nothing. :pain: It does help with redness but nothing beyond that. It did even-out skin tone but to a very small degree. The only time I actually liked using this, was when my skin was fairly clear or when used late in the evening so that the artificial lighting would blurr any imperfections and not make them so evident.

Finish: This has more of a dewy finish. Even though I have oily skin I still do like my skin to appear luminous and this does exactly that. But as time progresses, the dewiness turns to greasiness and I’m left craving for powder. My skin starts to shine so incredibly that you could probably see your reflection on my face sans a mirror! OK not really :-P…but I can tell you it’s not a pretty sight :struggle:

Lasting power: This lasts just about 2 hours on my uber-oily skin. It did stay put longer when worn in the evening or in cooler weather but still has poor staying power for something that claims to “last all day”. As for the “undetectable in any light” claim, I guess it’s kinda true since this is so sheer that you can’t quite see it on your skin 😛

Rimmel Match Perfection Cream Foundation Swatches

Fragrance: Has a really mild floral scent that is not at all discernible once applied. I was able to detect it only when I sniffed the pan.

What I like about:

  • Compact, lightweight, travel-friendly packaging
  • Comes with a mirror and applicator
  • Blends easily on damp skin
  • Gives a dewy finish
  • No discernible fragrance once applied
  • Has SPF 15
  • Comes in 6 shades

What don’t I like about:

  • Poor coverage. Not for those with blemishes, spots or very uneven skin tone
  • Not for those with oily skin or for use in humid weather
  • Not long-lasting. Disappears from my oily skin after 2 to 3 hours
  • Some may not like that this contains shimmer (although barely noticeable)
  • Requires a primer and a well-moisturized/damp base for even application
  • Sponge drinks up too much product and this foundation does not work very well with brushes (unless used wet)
  • Quantity is too less for the price
  • Packaging does not come sealed and my brand new piece came with a ton of scratches on the surface
  • Ingredients list is not mentioned anywhere on the packaging (I got the list from Rimmel’s official website)

Rating: 2.8/5

Final thoughts:

I was really hoping I’d like this since I like the compact packaging and the ease of application (no need to squirt foundation on the back of your hand and all that jazz). But this has really disappointed me in terms of coverage since even layers of this product doesn’t seem to even-out my blemish-prone skin. Also, it is not long-lasting as claimed and tends to slide off my oily skin leaving it greasy and overly shiny. If you’re wondering why I bothered to pick this up even though I had the opportunity to test it at a counter; Well, it’s because I made the huge mistake of applying this on top of my existing foundation (which I hadn’t wiped off) and it looked all dewy and nice over it. I don’t see myself recommending this to anyone since there are a ton of better options out there at a lesser price. You may want to try this only if you have dry, fairly clear skin and want sheer coverage with a dewy finish.

P.S: The li’l tube of BB cream that you see in the pics is a freebie with my purchase. I find it super-cute :cute: The bigger tube of course is the one I purchased earlier and reviewed here
