Salt and weight loss

When I was  young I read almost in all the books that salt is good for the body. It contains sodium and therefore helps our muscles and nerves in performing their function. But now we hear that to reduce your weight one should go slow with salt too. It is confusing and when I asked my doctor she explained me in detail and this is what I understood.

We do need salt but in moderation. One tsp. Of salt every day is the healthiest amount which one can take every day.
And the reason why one should avoid too much of salt is that one can lead to high blood pressure or chances of getting heart diseases increases of one take them in excess amount. Excess salt also make one feel bloated and heavy. So if you are trying to lose weight then limit your salt intake to avoid feeling bloated.
Many people say that there salt intake is quiet low but there are many hidden things which have lot of salt which we do not realise. For instance:-

1. Soups-Packaged soups are tasty and quick to make. They promise you good health and fitness but the fact of the matter is that they are loaded with sodium. Though now there are few companies which are introducing soups which are low in sodium or sodium free package soup. So do check your labels before buying  soup packets and if you don’t find them then home cooked option is the best.

2. Sauces– Yummy chilli sauce, mustard sauce, sweet sauce contains excess amount of sodium then what is required. By replacing sauces with mint chutney, vinegar or lemon we can reduce down the intake of sodium.

3. Pickles-Mom homemade pickles are loaded with sodium as they contain lot of salt.

4.Nuts– Nuts are always an healthy choice but some of the packages nuts have exorbitant amount of sodium in them which instead of giving us good health proves hazardous to us .So next time opt for unsalted nuts or if you like the packaged one then do read the label carefully.
With this, chips, baked snacks, instant cooking meals, ready to eat meals and noodles are packed with more sodium when are not a healthy option. We eat these things without knowing that how much excess intake of salt we have taken.
And that is the reason previously when these things didn’t exist we were asked to eat more salt and now we are asked to go slow with itJ

  1. The whole post is so true!! (Sorry hun, I alys add something in the comment but that's just because I want your readers to benefit more and more from your blog. even from the comments you get) So, I would like to add something what my Mum'd doctor told us :

1- Cooked salt is not as harlmful as raw salt is! like you made something and then added a sprinkle of the salt on top of the dish. This sprinkled or uncooked salt contains sodium in high amount.

I am one bad bad bad girl who alwasy does this and my puffy and baggy eyes are an example of this bad habit.

2- Uncooked salt makes your bones weak and they tend to get fractures easily.

SO the funda is no matter what: don't use uncooked salt on your dishes. But imo you are allowd to add uncooked salt in your salads. I can't even imagine of eating my salads without salt. but again you have chat-masala as a replacement.
