Shilpa Shetty THEN and NOW

Shilpa Shetty is one of those actresses from the 90’s who received a lot of adulation for her gorgeous international look. After her career in the limelight came to an end, she came to be known for her foray in the fitness industry and her marriage to Raj Kundra.

But before all this happened, what was she?

A simple girl born to a traditional family in Mangalore, how could she possibly get so far?

I wish we could say that to make a mark in Bollywood, talent alone is sufficient. But sadly that isn’t quite true. One needs to be either exceptionally gifted like Vidya Balan or incredibly stunning like Katrina Kaif to appeal to the Indian masses. In an industry like Bollywood, with such a bloated number of aspirants trying to make their mark it is incredibly important to walk the path less trodden.

In order to appeal to the Indian film fraternity, Shilpa chose to turn to cosmetic procedures. Gone was the gawky awkward teen and in her place rose the glamorous phoenix that Shilpa is now. Simply stated, Shilpa wasn’t born with the features that she now has. Even a casual onlooker can see the difference between her before and after pictures.

The biggest difference is her nose. It is public knowledge that she has gotten two rhinoplasties done to make her nose sharper and more defined. The new nose makes her entire look sleeker and makes her round face more angular.

It is rumoured that she has had a whole gamut of cosmetic procedures ranging from breast and butt implants to a much publicised skin lightening procedure. None of these rumours can obviously be quantified, but going by the pictures I may just have to agree about the skin lightening procedure. It could be a trick of lighting but after all, when it comes to cosmetic procedures one can only guess. Very few actresses have the guts to go on record stating that they have gotten cosmetic procedures done even though it so obviously rampant in the film industries all over the world.

But nevertheless, one cannot deny the hard work that Shilpa has put in to get her body in top shape. To attribute all her beauty to cosmetic procedures alone would be a grave injustice. She is one the most fit actresses in the Bollywood industry even after giving birth and that is a commendable achievement.

I do not condone any cosmetic procedure other than aggressive Botox, because of its very obvious plastic look. In Shilpa’s case it has lead to a transformation of epic proportions. She looks absolutely stunning and has obviously gained oodles of confidence. So can we really blame her for undergoing them?

When we look at ourselves in the mirror, all of us look at our imperfections. We all wish to change something for the better. Perhaps a less aquiline nose, bigger eyes or even a more defined jawline. The only thing that differentiates film industry beauties from us regular human beings is that they have their plastic surgeons on speed dial to actually get rid of these flaws. I think we would be hard pressed to find any film actress who hasn’t gotten a single procedure done.

While they are required to appeal to the Indian “standard” of beauty; Infact, thanks to their cosmetic procedure happy lives they tend to perpetuate this standard. Why must the general public with no disposable income try to conform to the same?

Next time that you look into the mirror and question your beauty or the lack of it thereof, remember that you are by no means plastic and beautiful as you are. 🙂

Or instead, if you wish to get these procedures done please go right ahead! It is your life, live it the way you want to but also realise that every medical procedure has a flip side. Things can go wrong and leave you even more messed up than you thought you were.

    • That is true, but if it makes you confident in yourself and you are willing to take those risks. Then nothing should stop you! 🙂

  1. I agree everyone has his/her own life and can do what they feel like! But the funny part is most of the actresses went under the knife but would just deny about it in public!!! lol
There are only few natural beauties rest fall in the same line!

    Loved reading the post 🙂

  2. You are right anamika…… even I think so….. madhuri dikit is like evergreen beauty to me…… and of course what can I say about kareena…… I think she is so glamorous…… her skin is fantastic.

    • Madhuri Dixit was set to age so gracefully, but she tread the cosmetic path. Kareena has stunning skin, and no one can take that away from her. 🙂

  3. Loved reading ur article niv..i feel it all depends in how u look at it..i have no aversion towards cosmetic surgeries..:) Nything tht gives ur confidence a boost..

    • Thanks a ton Van! I agree wholeheartedly with you. If it gives someone the ability to be proud of who they are, then they should go for it by all means! 🙂

  4. interesting write up Nivanya… I’m not sure if shilpa shetty has undergone procedures for her body or not, but she unarguably has the best body in Bollywood. It’s unbelievable how fast she’s got back in shape while most others are still struggling. Had she had a pretty face she would have been ruling the roost!

    • Thank you, I agree that she has a very stunning body structure.
But I don’t think any standard of looks can ever take the place of talent, the looks undoubtedly help but I don’t think she ever had the potential to rule the roost. 🙂

  5. I find her really attractive now and yes! who knows she might have got he figure back through surgery only although i think she is genetically blessed when it comes to weight loss..never saw her looking fat.

    • Some are just lucky to have a brilliant metabolism, perhaps she’s one of the lucky ones. But whatever the reason, her body is one of the best in the industry.

    • She is indeed one of the best, but I think Sridevi is THE best! It worked out so perfectly for her, that one can’t help but admire her luck.
      Thank you. 🙂
