The Body Shop 4-Step Smoky Eyes Palette in Golden Brown Review

The Body Shop 4-Step Smoky Eyes Palette in Golden Brown

The Body Shop is synonymous with quality skincare and most people love to indulge in their bath and body products and completely overlook their line of makeup products. I, on the other hand, head STRAIGHT to the makeup section! :shy:. Call it psychological, but I generally prefer makeup by skincare brands since I tend to “believe” they’re good for me. Yeah, yeah, I know it’s more of a myth since most of these so-called “natural” products contain their fair share of chemical and preservatives and what not and can easily be compared to their “not-so-natural” counterparts :-P. Nevertheless, I still rush to anything that even resembles natural or organic makeup. 😀 So yeah, on a yet-another-trip to the TBS makeup counter, my eyes fell on this beauty and I ended up bringing it back home, trotting like a happy lamb. :cute: Okay, I didn’t actually “trot” but went home by car :silly: but you understand the feeling, right? 😛

Packaging: This is a real beauty! :inlove: Given a choice I’d just post a million pictures and let them do the talking :cute: The shadows come in a glossy black plastic case with a golden band carrying the TBS logo. Once you open the case, you get a lovely huge mirror that makes me wish they’d make a compact or powder foundation with similar packaging. You can do your full face makeup using this mirror!

The shadows are housed in sleek, rectangular pans with a separate compartment for the eyeliner and brush. Am relieved to find a soft brush and not a crappy, sponge-tip applicator (totally dislike those). The brush is a cute, miniature version of regular TBS brushes with the handle wider at the base. I found it quite nice to use and will be very useful while traveling since you don’t really need to carry a separate brush. Since the brush is slightly fluffy, it can be used to not only pack-on color, but to blend shadows as well (if you’re ok with itsy-bitsy size).

Shade Description:

  • Shade 1 is a shimmery off-white (almost champagne) shadow that serves well as a base. It has finely milled shimmer that gives it a lovely sheen. It looks like powder but feels like cream
  • Shade 2 is a gorgeous shimmery antique brown leaning towards bronze. This too has a creamy feel
  • Shade 3 is a matte dark chocolate brown. Although not creamy like the others, it is super smooth and soft
  • Shade 4 is a cream-based shadow and looks like a lovely, shimmery golden beige – my favorite kind of eye shadow. But this one turned out to be a huuuuge disappointment! :struggle: When you swipe your brush or finger, all you get is wayyy too much yellow-gold shimmer on a transparent oily base that looks quite OTT under bright lights.

Pigmentation: All the shades (except the 4th highlighter shade) are nicely pigmented. I was quite surprised at the pigmentation since TBS does not usually succeed in making highly pigmented makeup. A major discovery was that some shades work well with brushes while some work better with fingers. The shimmery shades (1 and 2) do not show up when used with a brush. But the warmth of fingers seem to melt the smooth buttery shades and they turn out beautifully pigmented. On the other hand, the chocolate brown shade does not show up when picked up with a finger but is intensely pigmented with the slightest touch of a brush. The 4th shade is just greasy, bling-y glitter. I had such high hopes for this shade and was looking forward to using it even on the bridge of my nose, cheekbones and what not! :-/ The base color does not show up at all and it is useless as a highlighter. I feel this shade spoils the entire smoky-eye effect and I had to wipe it off and re-do the entire look without it.

Staying power:

This stays put for about 4 to 5 hours on my super-oily eyelids. Those with normal to dry skin can expect longer lasting power. In very humid weather, it did crease a bit and fade unevenly but I wouldn’t really blame the eye shadow. Nothing stays put on my greasy skin :struggle: It did work better with a primer and stayed put all day until removed.

What I like about The Body Shop 4-Step Smoky Eyes Palette in Golden Brown:

  • Sleek, classy, attractive packaging
  • Shades will complement Indian skin tones really well
  • Nice selection of neutrals apt for both day and night wear
  • Smooth, buttery texture that is easily blendable
  • Nicely pigmented (some shades work well with brushes while others work better with fingers)
  • No major fall-out
  • Easy to remove
  • Water-resistant (but not waterproof)
  • Does not irritate eyes
  • Large mirror…big enough to do your full face makeup
  • Comes with a mini-brush that has soft bristles
  • Easily portable-sized palette that is sturdy and travel-friendly

What I don’t like about The Body Shop 4-Step Smoky Eyes Palette in Golden Brown:

  • The 4th highlighter shade shows up as a transparent layer loaded with yellow-gold shimmer that looks odd and OTT when used on the brow bone as suggested
  • The eye pencil is hard, tugs and is poorly pigmented
  • May crease a bit and fade unevenly on very oily skin (sans primer)
  • Contains Parabens (and a dizzy-fying ingredients list! :hypnotized: )
  • Price

Rating: 4.2/5

The Body Shop 4-Step Smoky Eyes Palette in Golden Brown Review Hand Swatch+eye shadow colors

In the above pic, the first swatch (if you manage to spot it :-/) is a single swipe of the eye pencil. Yeah THAT’S how bad the pigmentation is! The second swatch is the pencil swiped MULTIPLE times  The 3rd one  is the base champagne shadow. The 4th matte brown may look less pigmented on my arm but shows up better on the eyelid. Next, is the gorgeous shimmery antique brown and finally, my least favorite, the oily creamy beige with chunky glitter

These images are proof that I suck at working with eye shadows!! N I simply can’t seem to photograph them right. :struggle:I took a ton of EOTDs but honestly did not want to put up any since they’re so bleh. But I know u guys expect an EOTD so I’m very generously willing to humiliate myself :shy:

The Body Shop 4-Step Smoky Eyes Palette in Golden Brown Review EOTD+how to apply eye shadow

Final Thoughts:

This palette has a lovely selection of shades for neutral-lovers and is great to carry for those on-the-go. They are surprisingly well-pigmented and last fairly long. While most eye shadows irritate my sensitive eyes, these did not. I experienced slight watering when used on the waterline but nothing alarming. I reeeealy wish the eye pencil had been of better quality since a pencil that fits inside a palette would have been an added bonus. The other major deterrent is the hefty price tag but TBS card holders can avail great discounts and grab these on offer.
