The Body Shop Shea Soap Review

The Body Shop Shea Soap Review

Before I begin this post, let me vent a little peeve against The Body Shop sale that is going on in the month of July. I was browsing around the shop and I came across their range of makeup. I tried on their blushes, eyeshadows and stuff, and guess what? None of them showed up nicely when I swatched them. And they were so hard! And five minutes after getting out of the shop, the shadows were gone from my hand like that! I swear, I will not think of this company’s makeup in the near future.

However, the soaps are nice.

About The Body Shop Shea Soap

This beautiful to look at soap, which according to the website, claims that it comes with a heart, part of their fair trade project: “Our Community Fair Trade shea butter comes from Ghana. Local women hand-harvest shea nuts, dry them in the sun and crack them to extract the kernels. These are roasted and ground into a paste to make the butter. Our trade with the Tungteiya Women’s Shea Butter Association has helped to fund three medical centres and 10 nursery schools.”

“With palm oil and glycerine to cleanse and moisturize in one step. Perfect for dry skins.”

  • Price: 155/- INR
  • Quantity: 100 gms.
  • Ingredients:

The list of which is NOT listed on the soap (I had to look up TBS website) are as follows:

“Sodium Palmate (Surfactant), Sodium Palm Kernelate (Surfactant), Aqua (Water) (Solvent/Diluent), Glycerin (Humectant), Sorbitol (Humectant), Palm Kernel Acid (Surfactant), Parfum (Fragrance), Butyrospermum parkii (Shea Butter) (Emollient), Linalool (Fragrance Ingredient), Coumarin (Fragrance Ingredient), Tetrasodium EDTA (Chelating Agent), Tetrasodium Etidronate (Chelating Agent), Alpha-Isomethyl Ionone (Fragrance Ingredient), Limonene (Fragrance Ingredient), Butylphenyl Methylpropional (Fragrance Ingredient), Citronellol (Fragrance Ingredient), Citral (Fragrance Ingredient), Geraniol (Fragrance Ingredient), Eugenol (Fragrance Ingredient), CI 77891 (Colour), CI 77492 (Colour), CI 77491 (Colour).”

Basically, the instructions to use are simple – “Use in the bath or shower to create a foamy lather all over your body. Rinse off thoroughly”. I gave it a try in the bath a month back.

My Take on The Body Shop Shea Soap

Okay, so this is my take.

First of all, the soap is off-white in color and contains a lot of weird ingredients, but I did not see coconut oil, which is a blessing, since coconut oil does not suit my skin much (it does, however, suit my hair to a tee). I was pretty relieved to see that. Also, if you would note, it does not contain SLS or parabens. Although it lathers up a LOT in the shower. I kid you not.

The soap is large, and easily lasted me a month. The other great thing is, this does not melt down, so it is a durable soap. It lathers up well, and it gives off a nice, homey, comfortable perfume, which I like. I am reminded of warm tubs, fresh flowers and vanilla ice cream, all at the same time, although none of them remotely resembles the fragrance. I adore that smell, and it is subtle enough to not irritate the noses of most people.  However, 15-20 minutes after the bath, the smell disappears.

The bar is not very travel-friendly, as it has to be kept in its own pack and all that. What I like about it is that, unlike most other soaps, this does not dry out my skin too much (probably the glycerin in it). That is a point where I am sold. It does stick to the claim of not dehydrating skin, though after shower I follow up with moisturizer, since the soap is not THAT hydrating. However, remember, this is just the rainy season and not winter, where the soap would have gone through a serious challenge.
