Uses of Various Essential Oils

 

Previously you have read about benefits and uses of essential oils and also the reasons to include essential oils in your beauty regimen.

Essential oils are the concentrated extracts of various parts of plants. These are present in many readymade skin care products, but if you use them directly, the benefits become quicker and better.

Essential oils are absorbed into the body via the nose and the pores of skin and hair follicles. From there they enter the bloodstream and circulate throughout the body. The beauty of aromatherapy is that you benefit from the inhalation and topical application of the essential oils.

Orange Essential Oil

Orange essential oil helps in promoting production of collagen which leads to increase in the blood flow of the skin. It soothes acne prone skin. Orange essential oil uplifts the mind and has soothing properties which helps in getting rid of the stress. This oil also helps in curing mouth ulcers. Massaging the essential oil on the abdominal area helps in increasing the absorption of vitamin C and helps in getting rid of constipation.

It can be used to make a gargle-solution to treat a sore throat.

Lavender Essential Oils

It’s also referred as a universal oil and works well for various problems. It has uses in skin troubles, respiratory problems, nervous system and many more.

Lavender oil has antiseptic and antifungal properties. It helps in acne, scars, bruises, allergies, stretch marks etc. It’s beneficial in respiratory problems like cold and asthma. It has a calming influence and makes you feel better. It helps with headache, migraine, tension and PMS. It’s good for insomnia. It aids in treating indigestion, stomach pain, diarrhoea. Lavender oil improves blood circulation and helps in high blood pressure, joint pains and relaxes your muscles. It is great for soothing the scalp and calming the hair.

Lavender oil can be used neat or along with carrier oils as well. You can apply it externally for most purposes. For respiratory problems, vapours can be taken.

Diabetics and pregnant and breast feeding women should avoid using it.

Peppermint Essential Oil

Peppermint oil contains menthol which is good for skin and gives a cooling effect. Used most commonly in soaps, shampoos and toothpaste, this oil contains many minerals and nutrients which include iron, manganese, calcium, copper, vitamin A and Vitamin C.

Peppermint oil helps in stimulating mind and enhancing mental focus. due to its cooling and soothing effect, it is often used in balms.
Peppermint helps in increasing blood flow and improves dull skin. If massaged on problem skin then it acts as a pain-killer. It also has anti-bacterial properties.

On the downside, peppermint can sometime irritate the skin especially if one is allergic to it. Pregnant women should not use this and avoid using it on young children who may have a sensitive skin.

Tea Tree Essential Oil

The oil has amazing healing powers and this essential oil has been used for soothing skin and as a remedy for wounds and cuts by the aboriginal tribes of Australia for thousands of years.

Tea tree oil can treat insect bites, athlete’s foot, blisters, burns, abscess, oily skin, acne, rashes, spots, warts, diaper rash, sunburns, smelly feet and problems related to toenail infections.
It helps in treating zits. You can add a few drops of tea tree oil to your regular shampoo or Tea tree-infused shampoos usually contain about 2 to 5% concentration of the oil (any more than that and it will be too strong). It helps to rid the scalp of fungus and bacteria causing dandruff and itchy scalp.

Tea tree oil has disinfectant properties and can be a good remedy for genito-urinary tract infections like vaginitis, thrush, pruitis and cystitis.

It boosts immunity. Tea tree oil also has anti-bacterial properties so it can be used to keep the wounds clean.

The oil can be inhaled by adding few drops in a vaporizer or steam bath. What it does is it provides an instant remedy for constant cold and cough, bronchitis, asthma, cough, catarrh, tuberculosis and sinusitis. It also treats skin problems like eczema and dermatitis.

    My personal favourites are Tea tree, Neem, sandal wood and peppermint. I use them in my FPs, toners and makeup remover concoction that I custom prepare formyself.
