VLCC Insta Glow Herbal Bleach Review & Bleaching Tips

I started out on my bleaching journey with Jolen, I then moved onto Fem and am totally in love with Fem Apple&Peach Bleach! It looks like strawberry soufflé and even smells good 😛 While I was doing some shopping at Health & Glow, I came across this and thought why not try a herbal bleach for a change :heh: Yes, yes, I’m aware of the ill effects of using bleaching agents like Hydrogen peroxide on skin. But it’s just that no amount of lotions, potions, creams or face packs makes as much difference to my face as a good bleach does. The results are long lasting and I don’t have to worry about any skin treatments for another 2 weeks at least. Those who have prominent facial hair will understand my plight  :struggle:

  • Shelf-life: 18 months from mfg date
  • Packaging:

The bleach comes in a green outer carton with the complete list of ingredients. Inside you will find one medium-sized plastic tub containing bleach cream, one tiny tub containing powder activator, a sachet containing post bleach pack, a spatula and a pamphlet with the bleaching instructions and precautions in 8 different languages  The only issue with the packaging is that the bleach cream tub does not come with an inner lid that most other brands do have. Because of this, the product completely spills onto the lid and messes it. The pic on the left shows exactly how the bleach cream tub looked like when I opened it for the very first time. The right pic is the powder activator.

My experience with VLCC Insta Glow Herbal Bleach:

The bleach cream is a lovely pista-green color whereas the powder activator is pale green. When mixed, for the first 2 to 3 uses, the mixture was very lumpy and application was really uneven. Because of this, it did not bleach hair evenly and I was going to write it off as a dud. But after about 3 uses, the cream had a more uniform consistency and application was hence more even. I’m not sure if this is the nature of the cream or if the hot weather helped to melt down all the lumps.

For all its herbal-ness and vegetable inclusions, it still stung like its chemical counterpart and the acidic fragrance of hydrogen peroxide was still present. But there was also a pleasant herbal fragrance mixed with that so it balanced it out a bit. It is mentioned in the instructions that those with darker skin tone should leave the bleach on for upto 10 min, wheatish skin upto 15 mins and fair skin atleast 15 mins or more. Due to my prior experience in bleaching, I know that it takes a minimum of 20 mins for my hair to get bleached. So, I usually leave this on for atleast 20 to 25 mins. While typing this review, I left it on for half an hour without realizing the time and it did not irritate my skin. It does not dry completely and remains fairly wet even after the estimated time. Thus, it is easy to remove and it still manages to bleach the hair fairly well. As for the Insta Glow part, there was some glow…I think ?:-) . I mean… I don’t think it made any remarkable difference as such :-/ Works like regular chemical bleaches.

The post bleach pack comes in a small sachet and is a thick, green, creamy paste with certain parts of it being pure white. It looked like someone tried to mix white cream and green cream and stopped halfway. It has a sweet, nutty fragrance similar to pistachios. It feels and behaves just like a clay pack and is meant to be used soon after bleaching. It applies evenly and dries to a thin, powdery film. The pack has a lovey list of ingredients but I feel it did not contribute to the “glow” as claimed since it leaves the skin feeling fresh yet matte. In fact, I felt my skin had some glow only when I used the bleach without following it up with the pack. It is meant to be a one-time-use sachet but I made mine last for 2 uses. They could have provided more quantity of face pack in tub form instead of just one sachet.

What I like about VLCC Insta Glow Herbal Bleach:

  • Herbal ingredients that provide topical nutrition to skin
  • Easy to use
  • Bleaches hair well
  • Clear instructions in various languages
  • Complete list of ingredients
  • One pack gave me atleast 7 uses (depends upon usage)
  • Did not irritate my skin
  • Easy to remove
  • Comes with a post bleach pack containing nourishing herbal ingredients
  • Very reasonably priced
  • Easily available

What I don’t like about VLCC Insta Glow Herbal Bleach:

  • Bleach cream tub does not contain an inner lid thus causing the product to spill onto the cap.
  • Post bleach pack quantity is very less and will last only for 1 or max 2 uses.
  • Bleach cream was very lumpy and application was patchy for the first 2 uses
  • Rating:

It’s a little tricky to rate this :-/ If I were to rate this after using it just once or twice I would have given it maybe 2.5/5. And if I were to rate this based on only the 3rd and 4th experience, I may give it 4.5/5. But since I have to rate it based on overall performance I’ll give this: 3.8/5

 15 Bleaching Tips:-

Now that we’re done with the review, I thought I’ll share a few tips to get the best out of your bleaching experience:

  • Always start by reading the instructions carefully beforehand  since directions may vary from brand to brand
  • If you are bleaching for the first time, do a patch test on the inside of your elbow. If irritation occurs, discontinue use and maybe try switching brands.
  • Again, for first time users,  it would be a good idea to start with a mild herbal bleach intended for sensitive skin and then progress to concentrated ones as your skin gets accustomed to it.
  • Wash your face with cold water before bleaching. Do not use warm/hot water since it will open up your pores and the bleach may seep through the surface of the skin increasing sensitivity.
  • Try rubbing an ice cube all over your face before bleaching to ensure that all your pores are closed and skin is toned.
  • Do not bleach immediately after using scrubs/exfoliators/peels. If you are undergoing treatments like chemical peels or laser therapy, completely avoid bleaches until the treatment period is over. Even after that, bleach only after consulting your dermatologist.
  • Using creams that contain retinol, benzoyl peroxide, glycolic acid etc. may increase the sensitivity of your skin to bleaches. Limit the use of these creams a day or two prior to the day you intend to bleach.
  • Do not apply bleach on irritated/chapped/ inflamed skin. Never apply on open wounds, burns or cuts.
  • Do not apply bleach in the eye contour area. If by any chance, it gets into your eyes, rinse with cold water immediately.
  • Some bleaches come with a spatula and a plastic plate to prepare the bleach mixture. If this is not provided, use a plastic bowl and plastic spatula/ spoon. Never use metal bowls/spoons to prepare the mixture. Metals tend to react with the chemical components of the bleach activator.
  • Do not use soaps, face washes, creams, lotions or anything except pure water on bleached skin for a minimum of 6 to 8 hours. Bleaching removes a layer of your skin, making it extra sensitive and thus needs time to recuperate.
  • Avoid going out in the sun immediately after bleaching due to the above mentioned reason.
  • The best time to bleach is at night before bedtime since sleep restores and repairs your skin. Plus, you don’t have to use anything on your face and there is no danger of exposure to sunlight.
  • Do not bleach immediately after waxing, threading, epilating or any other form of hair removal.
  • Try to avoid bleaching when you are pregnant or lactating. Some might argue that it’s safe but who wants to take the risk anyway?!

These are all the tips that I could think of. If there are any more that you would like to mention/add to this list, please feel free to do so in the comments below. Happy Bleaching! :cute:
