Winter Care for Chapped Lips

Chapped lips is a common concern for most of us during cold & dry winter months. As the winters are approaching it is very important for us to begin to care for our lips so we can keep our smiles soft & rosy through out this season.

The main reason for this is due to the absence of sebaceous glands. Lips cannot produce sebum like our skin, which makes them more prone to dryness. A very thin protective layer of oil is present to inhibit moisture loss, but it is often removed due to various reasons.

1. Licking or biting lips
2. Dryness in the air
3. Spending long hours in Air conditioned places
4. Dehydration
5. Reactions to lip products
6. Over consumption of spicy food.
chapped lips
Most of us have the habit of licking our lips without even realising, the enzymes present in our saliva depletes them of moisture. Having to spend long hours in an air conditioned environment, consumption of caffeinated beverages, spicy food & increased levels of pollution lead to painful cracked lips. We usually rely on commercial lip balms & chap sticks to tackle the problem but most of them contain synthetic & chemical derivatives like petrolatum, mineral oil etc which do not heal chapped lips but only seal moisture, yet they can irritate the sensitive skin. The presence of tints can further aggravate the condition causing cracked lips to bleed or even allergies. Following a few easy to do home remedies can prevent the problem altogether.
Caring for your lips is very simple & effortless. All you need to follow is scrubbing your lips thrice a week, to get rid of dead skin. Application of home made recipes at bed time to replenish & hydrate your lips. Lip balms can be used when you are outdoors to protect them from chapping.

2. Slit a Vitamin E capsule & add it to 1/2 a tsp of ghee, mix well & apply it to your lips before bed time. You can substitute ghee with butter if you dislike the smell of ghee. The rest of it can be stored in a small container & used up to a week. Make a fresh batch every week.
